Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Broncos outlasted by Wave, 70-55; Wenzel posts game-high 20 points, team-best 14 boards despite loss

The Broncos' men's basketball team suffered a home defeat on Thursday evening, falling to the Wave of Kingsborough Community College by a score of 70-55. The game took place at the Alumni Gymnasium in the Bronx. With the defeat, Bronx slipped to a mark of 0-4 on the 2024-2025 campaign, while Kingsborough improved to 1-4.

Despite the loss for Bronx, veteran James Wenzel connected on seven of his nine free throw attempts on his way to registering a game-high 20 points. He also snatched a team-best 14 rebounds (including seven on the offensive glass) while also leading all players with five steals. Abraham Richter scored 16 points, pulled down nine rebounds, swatted a game-high four shots, and swiped three steals, and newcomer Bobby Robbins connected on three of his five attempts from the floor, contributing seven points.

Four players scored in double figures for Kingsborough, including Christopher Jace and Abdoul Toure, who tied for the team-high of 15 points. Jace also posted game-highs of 15 rebounds and nine assists, while also registering four steals. Phillip Khobot netted 13 points while grabbing eight caroms, blocking three shots, dishing two assists, and swiping two steals, and Tysean Boney finalized his evening with 12 points and six boards.

Trailing 27-18 with 3:53 remaining in the first half, the Broncos closed out the session with a ferocious 13-3 run to catapult ahead by a score of 31-30 at the break. Wenzel accounted for six of the points during that aforementioned run, with Robbins contributing five.

With the contest knotted at 34 apiece early in the second half, a converted jumper by Richter gave the Broncos a 36-34 edge. Over the next 6:11, though, the visitors would put together a surge, outscoring Bronx 17-6 to take a 53-40 advantage. That run was capped by a made layup by Boney.

Behind 55-42 with 10:32 left, the Broncos rattled off six consecutive points, courtesy of a pair of buckets by Wenzel, and another by Richter, as the hosts inched to within seven (55-48) with 7:51 to go. Unfortunately for Bronx, that would be the closest they would get, as the Broncos would convert on just two out of their final 12 shots. Kingsborough would eventually go on to win the contest by 15 (70-55).

For the evening, the Wave converted on 37.7 percent of their attempts from the floor (26-69), while the Broncos hit on just 19 of 67 (28.4 percent). The Wave held a slim 53-48 edge on the glass, while also dishing 17 assists to Bronx's 12. The Broncos held a 13-12 edge in steals, but Kingsborough won the turnover battle, committing 20 miscues, while the hosts had 24.

The Broncos will look to bounce back on Saturday afternoon, as Bronx will travel to Suffern, NY to take on Rockland Community College. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 1:00pm.
