Broncos drop CUNYAC finale to Tigers 3-1 despite Ashraf Abubakar's team-leading 11th goal

The Broncos' men's soccer team dropped its final CUNYAC match of the 2024 campaign on Tuesday afternoon, falling to the Tigers of Queensborough Community College by a score of 3-1. The match took place at Ohio Field on the campus of Bronx Community College. With the defeat, the Broncos dipped to a mark of 3-5 overall (1-3 CUNYAC), while the Tigers improved to 6-4-1 (3-0-1 CUNYAC).

During the opening 43 minutes of action between the CUNYAC rivals, neither squad was able to register a goal. Broncos goalkeeper Edwin Martinez stopped four saves at that juncture of the contest, including two very impressive ones to keep the match scoreless. Bronx finally broke through in the 44th minute when offensive standout Ashraf Abubakar redirected Abdul Rauf Mohammed's pass into the net (team-leading 11th goal), as the Broncos took a 1-0 lead, an advantage they'd keep as time eventually expired on the first half.

Queensborough tied the match early in the second session (48th minute) when Juan Rambal netted the equalizer, slashing home a feed from Jefferson Cubias to knot the match at one apiece. Later, in the 80th minute, Cubias registered an unassisted tally to give the Tigers a 2-1 advantage. In the 89th minute (88:36), Rambal netted another goal (from Kevin Uribe) to essentially clinch the victory for the visiting Tigers.

For the match, the Tigers held a 19-12 edge in shots. Bronx earned six corner kicks compared to Queensborough's five, and the Broncos were whistled for 11 fouls to the Tigers' 10.

Queensborough's Anthony Bardales earned the victory in goal for his squad, logging all 90 minutes and yielding one goal while making five Saves. On the flip side, Martinez took the loss in net for the Broncos, playing 80:39 and allowing two goals while stopping five shots. Reserve goalkeeper Bara Samb logged 9:21, allowing one goal and making one save.

The Broncos will wrap-up their home portion of the schedule on Thursday afternoon, as Bronx will host Ulster County Community College. Start-time at Ohio Field is scheduled for 3:30pm.
