Women's volleyball puts forth valiant effort before dropping CUNYAC match to Panthers

The Broncos' women's volleyball team lost a CUNYAC match on Thursday evening, falling to the Panthers of the Borough of Manhattan Community College by scores of 11-25, 16-25, and 14-25. With the defeat, Bronx slipped to a mark of 1-12 on the 2024 campaign (0-4 CUNYAC), while the Panthers improved to 6-3 (4-1 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for Bronx, Pamela Sierra registered a team-high six kills to go along with 11 digs. Yamelis Santana contributed three kills, a pair of service aces, and two digs, and Valerie De Los Santos added two kills and a match-high 18 digs. Andrea Ramos finished with two kills, six digs, and three assists, and setter Naomi Rodriguez finished with eight digs and a team-high six assists.

Jaylynn Mateo led all players with 10 kills, swatting .529 in the process (10-1-17). Her 13 digs were also a team-best, and she added a pair of service aces. Emmanuella Aurel finished with nine kills (9-1-27, .296), 12 digs, and a match-high seven service aces. Ishingy Lennon and Devon Vazquez finalized their evenings with eight digs apiece, and Kavana Liburd's 20 assists led all players.

Trailing 5-1 in the opening set, the Broncos inched to within a point (5-4) following a kill by Shanice Walters, and consecutive service aces by Santana. The Panthers scored the next eight points to take a commanding 13-4 edge. That aforementioned spurt was highlighted by Aurel's four service aces.

Later, trailing 19-8, Bronx scored two straight thanks to a kill by Rodriguez and an attack error by Mateo. That brought the visitors to within nine (19-10), but BMCC scored six of the final seven points of the set to win it, 25-11. Lennon contributed two service aces during that last Panther run, with Aurel and Zoe Gomez contributing a kill apiece.

In the second set, Bronx fell behind 15-5 but stormed back with five straight points to pull to within five (15-10). That 5-0 run featured five errors by the Panthers, including a pair of attack errors by Devon Vazquez. BMCC ran off four consecutive points to push its advantage to nine (thanks to two kills by Aurel, one by Lennon, and a service ace by Valerie Reynoso). The Panthers later led 22-16, before finishing the set with three straight points to capture it, 25-16, and go up 2-0 in sets for the evening.

Both teams exchanged the first eight points of the third set before the Panthers scored four consecutive points to lead 8-4, capped off by an Aurel kill. The Broncos got within two, 10-8, after a Vazquez attack error, but the Panthers would pull away after with a 12-3 run to increase their lead to 11, 22-11, the largest of the set, and take the match with a 25-14 victory.

BMCC swatted .200 for the evening (30-11-95), while the Broncos hit in the negative -.030 (15-18-101). The Panthers held a 63-51 edge in digs, while also piling 18 service aces, while the Broncos registered eight.

The Broncos will return to action on Saturday afternoon, as Bronx will travel to Long Island City, NY to battle LaGuardia Community College. Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 12:00pm.
