Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Broncos put forth valiant effort in third set before Wave holds on for 3-0 victory

The Broncos' women's volleyball team returned to the court last night, dropping a CUNYAC match to the Wave of Kingsborough Community College by scores of 13-25, 11-25, and 21-25. The match took place at the Alumni Gymnasium in the Bronx. With the defeat, the Broncos slipped to a mark of 1-11 on the 2024 campaign (0-3 CUNYAC), while the Wave improved to 4-7 overall (3-3 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for Bronx, Shanice Walters put forth her finest performance as a member of the Broncos, registering a team-high five kills on 10 swats (.500 hitting percentage). Additionally, Yamelis Santana and Naomi Rodriguez tallied two kills apiece, with Santana also contributing two service aces and a pair of digs, and Rodriguez finishing with four digs. Andrea Ramos notched two kills, a team-high three assists, and four digs, and Veronica Rivera's seven digs tied for the match-high.

For Kingsborough, Kyrah Allison's seven kills led all players. She also contributed three service aces to go along with three digs. Solandra Arizaga finished with five kills, six digs, and four service aces, and Lovelle Harris added five kills on nine swats (5-1-9, .444). Rayan Jahmi put together a sensational all-around effort, as her 13 assists and nine service aces were both match-bests, and she also added seven digs.

Set one featured plenty of back-and-forth play in the early stages. Bronx led 2-0 following an attack error by Allison, and an awarded point due to the Wave being out of rotation. Kingsborough then ran off five consecutive points, courtesy of an Allison kill, three service aces by Arizaga, and a bad set by Rivera. The Broncos stormed back to capture the next three points due to three straight Kingsborough errors. At that juncture, the set was tied 5-5.

The Wave established dominance in the set after the early stages, scoring 12 of the next 15 points to snatch a commanding 17-8 advantage. Arizaga contributed two kills, and Jasmine Morris registered a pair of service aces during that aforementioned spurt. Later, holding a 23-13 edge, Kingsborough closed out the set following a Santana error, and a service ace by Allison.

Trailing 17-3 in the second set, the Broncos showed valiance, outscoring the Wave 8-7 over a 15-point span to pull to within 24-11. For different Bronx players recorded at least one kill during that stretch, including Valerie De Los Santos, Santana, Rodriguez, and Walters. For the Wave, Allison, just as she did in the opening set, clinched the second set by recording a kill.

In the most competitive set of the evening, the Broncos rallied from 15-6 deficit to tie the set at 20-all. Walters served as a tremendous sparkplug during that 14-5 Bronx run, recording three kills. Additionally, Ramos, Santana, and Rivera all contributed a kill apiece.

Later, following a 4-1 Kingsborough run, the Wave led 24-21 and had an opportunity to slam the door on the Broncos, but Bronx fought off match-point as Walters earned yet another kill to pull Bronx to within two (24-22). The Wave would respond, though, with Arizaga slamming home Jahmi's perfect set to clinch the victory for Kingsborough.

Kingsborough swatted .082 for the night (22-17-61), while Bronx hit .055 (13-10-55). The Wave held a dominating 23-4 edge in service aces, while also registering 32 digs compared to 21 for the hosts.

Bronx will now return to the court on Thursday evening, as the Broncos will travel to lower Manhattan to take on CUNYAC foe BMCC. Start-time for that conference clash is scheduled for 6:00pm.
