Broncos drop CUNYAC clash to Tigers in first contest of calendar year 2024

The Broncos' men's basketball team dropped its first game of calendar year 2024, falling to CUNYAC foe Queensborough on Saturday afternoon by a score of 91-55. The contest took place at RFK Gymnasium in Queens, NY. With the defeat, Bronx has now lost four consecutive contests, dipping to 3-11 on the 2023-2024 campaign (2-4 CUNYAC). The Tigers improved to 5-6 (5-1 CUNYAC) with the triumph.

Despite the loss for Bronx, sharpshooter Matthew Candelaria tied for the game-high of 13 points (4-5 FT). He also led all players in steals with four, while grabbing three rebounds and registering three assists. Herbert Gary recorded his fourth double-double of the season, netting 12 points while snatching a team-high 11 rebounds, and versatile freshman James Wenzel added 11 points, six boards, three blocked shots, and three dimes.

In the victory for Queensborough, the Tigers were paced by Isaiah Grant, as tied for the game-high of 13 points, knocking down four of his five attempts from the floor, and all three of his freebees in the process. He also snatched four rebounds, as well. Yasin Abdur-Rashid scored 12 points to go along with a pair of steals and two assists, and Abdoulaye Thiam and Nankouma Dioubate scored 12 and 11 points, respectively. Finally, it was Williams Guzman narrowly missing registering a double-double, as he finished with eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Queensborough dominated the CUNYAC clash from start to finish. The Tigers jumped out to an early 7-0 advantage just 44 seconds into the contest, with Abdur Rashid accounting for five of those points. Queensborough ballooned that lead to 20 points, 26-6, with 7:00 remaining in the half. The Broncos accounted for just two converted field goals in the opening seven minutes. Queensborough progressively built its advantage during the opening 20 minutes, eventually taking a commanding 52-18 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Tigers took their biggest lead of the game, a 49-point edge (74-25), with 10:57 remaining. Bronx refused to go quietly, putting together a ferocious 19-5 run over the ensuing 5:45 to pull to within 35, 79-44, with 5:12 remaining on the clock. Candelaria scored seven points during that aforementioned spurt, with Wenzel also contributing five.

Despite Bronx's run, Queensborough would eventually push its lead back to 40 points, before going on to win the game by 36 (91-55).

Queensborough connected on 43.5 percent of its attempts from the floor (30-69), while the Broncos struggled throughout, earning a conversion percentage of 26.1 percent (18-69). The Tigers held a slim edge in the rebounding department, snatching 54 boards compared to 52 for the visitors, and Queensborough also won the turnover battle, committing 18 miscues, while the Broncos finished with 24. Bronx did swat more shots, blocking eight Queensborough attempts, while the Tigers finalized their afternoon with five, but Queensborough dominated both the assists (20-7) and steals (19-8) columns on the day.

Bronx will begin a four-game homestand this Tuesday evening, as the Broncos will host CUNYAC foe LaGuardia Community College in a crucial conference contest. Start-time at the Alumni Gymnasium is scheduled for 6:00pm.
