Broncos drop CUNYAC game to Red Hawks, 67-57; Daniel Armstrong scores team-high 20 points in defeat

The Broncos' men's basketball team dropped a crucial CUNYAC contest at home on Tuesday evening, falling to the Red Hawks of LaGuardia Community College by a score of 67-57. The contest took place at the Alumni Gymnasium in the Bronx. With the defeat, the Broncos dipped to a mark of 3-12 overall (2-5 CUNYAC). The Red Hawks improved to 2-11 with the victory (2-5 CUNYAC), completing the season sweep of Bronx.

Leading the way for the Broncos on the evening was freshman Daniel Armstrong, as he connected on nine of his 15 attempts from the floor, finishing with a team-high 20 points. He also snatched five rebounds and tallied two steals, as well. Versatile standout James Wenzel added 13 points, three rebounds, three dimes, and a pair of swatted shots, and Herbert Gary notched his fifth double-double of the 2023-2024 campaign, dropping in 12 points and grabbing a game-high 17 rebounds, and Matthew Candelaria contributed eight points, hitting a pair of trifectas in the process.

Arthur Dukes paced the visitors with a stellar effort, as the youngster knocked down all eight of his attempts from the free throw line, finishing with a game-high 25 points. He also grabbed five rebounds, dished a game-high four assists, and added two steals. Travon Lawrence finished with 18 points and four steals, and Ahmad Sackor contributed 14 points, eight rebounds, a game-high six steals, and three assists. Finally, Rayan MeGuie pulled down a team-high 13 boards.

In what was a low-scoring affair, both squads netted just three points apiece in the opening six minutes of action. The CUNYAC foes proceeded to exchange the lead five times over the next 8:58, with the last of those pendulum swings coming when Wenzel converted on a layup to put the Broncos ahead 21-20 with 4:42 remaining in the opening half. Bronx then stretched its lead to six (26-20) following a converted jumper and a freebee from Wenzel, and a made layup by Armstrong. The Red Hawks would finish the half strong, though, outscoring the hosts 9-2 to take a slim 29-28 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

Bronx took the lead back in the opening 39 seconds of the second half thanks to a converted fastbreak layup by Armstrong. LaGuardia grabbed the lead back 26 seconds later on a made jumper by Sackor, as the Red Hawks took a 31-30 advantage. That lead ballooned to 10 points, 45-35, with 7:14 remaining in the contest, and it looked as though LaGuardia was in prime position to win the game, but the Broncos would then put together a run.

Gary made a layup with 6:44 remaining to pull Bronx to within eight (45-37), and three possessions later, the standout forward converted on another layup to inch the hosts to within six points with 5:13 to go. On Bronx's next two possessions, Armstrong converted on a layup and slammed a ball home, pulling Bronx to within two (45-43), and prompting a Red Hawks timeout.

Coming out of the timeout, a settled-down LaGuardia squad put the game away, draining 13 of 14 attempts from the charity stripe in the final 3:59. The Red Hawks' defense also clamped down on Bronx, allowing just one Broncos converted field goal for the remainder of the contest.

Neither squad shot particularly well on the evening, with LaGuardia converting on 36.2 percent of its attempts from the floor (21-58), and the Broncos hitting on 23 of 67 shots (34.3 percent). The Red Hawks drained 79.2 percent of their attempts from the line (19-24), while Bronx hit on 38.9 percent of their freebees (7-18). The Broncos held a slim 44-41 edge on the glass, while also dishing 12 assists compared to the Red Hawks' 10. LaGuardia did narrowly win the turnover battle, committing 18 miscues while Bronx had 20.

The Broncos will return to the court on Thursday, January 11, as Bronx will host Orange County Community College. Start-time at the Alumni Gymnasium is scheduled for 6:00pm.
