Broncos overwhelmed by Express, 87-60; Daniel Armstrong scores team-high 13 points in defeat

The Broncos' men's basketball team dropped a home game on Tuesday evening, falling to the Express of Monroe College-Bronx by a score of 87-60. With the loss, Bronx dropped to a mark of 3-19 on the 2023-2024 campaign, while the Express improved to 13-9 on the year.
 
Despite the loss for the Broncos, freshman Daniel Armstrong paced Bronx with a team-high 13 points. He also added seven rebounds and a game-high three blocked shots. Taijay Good contributed 12 points, three assists, and two rebounds, and Messiah Alexander finished with 11 points and three boards. Finally, it was standout Herbert Gary notching another double-double, scoring 10 points and snatching a game-high 11 caroms.
 
The Express was led by Jovan Young's team-high 19 points. He also registered three dimes, as well. Jaream Eason posted a double-double with 15 points and a team-high 10 rebounds, and Steven Mcgriff netted 13 points and tied for the game-high of five assists. Jevonte Valerie finalized his evening with 10 points and two boards, and Abubakar Kromah contributed eight points and nine caroms.
 
Monroe-Bronx dominated the contest from start to finish. With the contest tied at two in the early stages, Eason broke the tie, as the Express went on an 11-0 run over a span of 4:17 to take a 13-2 advantage. Young capped that aforementioned spurt by draining a triple, with Eason picking up the assist. Later in the session, Monroe-Bronx went on another significant run, another 11-0 spurt that concluded with a pair of free throws from Eason, to give Monroe – Bronx a commanding 52-28 hold with 59 seconds to go before the intermission. The Express capped the first half with a converted layup by Valerie in the closing seconds to send his team into the break with a 56-30 cushion.
 
In the second half, Monroe–Bronx led by as many as 33 on their way to the decisive 87-60 victory.
 
The Express connected on 42.4 percent of its attempts from the floor (36-85), while the Broncos earned a conversion rate of 30.3 percent (20-66). Monroe-Bronx dominated the glass, snatching 60 rebounds compared to 44 for the hosts, and the visitors also piled 27 assists to the Broncos' 13. The Broncos did hold a 6-2 edge in blocked shots, but Monroe-Bronx won the turnover battle, committing 17 miscues, while the Broncos finished with 20.
 
Bronx will look to bounce back Thursday evening, as the Broncos will welcome the Caimans of Hostos Community College to the Alumni Gymnasium for a crucial CUNYAC contest. Start-time is scheduled to 6:00pm. Prior to the contest, sophomores Matthew Candelaria, Herbert Gary, Taijay Good, Dominique Norman, and Damien Sanchez will get honored in a ceremony celebrating their two-year tenures as members of the institution's men's basketball program.
