Broncos allow 71 points to Lions in second half as Nassau routs Bronx; Herbert Gary scores team-high 16 despite loss

The Broncos' men's basketball team's defense faltered in the second half after a solid opening 20 minutes, allowing 71 points in the final session and falling to Nassau Community College by a score of 102-63. With the defeat, Bronx dipped to a mark of 3-17 on the season, while the Lions improved to 10-7.

Despite the loss for Bronx, Herbert Gary put forth a stellar performance, scoring a team-high 16 points (6-10 FG) to go along with three rebounds and three dimes. Timothaeus Graham added eight points, three boards, and a pair of assists, and Messiah Alexander finalized his evening with seven points.

Jesse Taylor was locked in the Lions, connecting on nine of his 19 shot attempts, including seven of his 12 launches from downtown, to finish with a game-high 27 points. He also snatched seven boards, dished four assists, and registered four steals. Bashir Byrd and Shane Turner scored 17 points apiece, with Byrd adding six assists, and Turner grabbing seven rebounds while blocking a pair of shots and tallying two steals. Anthony Todd posted a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, and Dajul Johnson finalized his night with 12 points, game-highs of nine assists and six steals, and four rebounds.

The Broncos held an early 6-3 advantage after Kevin Soto knocked down a jumper 2:10 into the contest. Nassau then outscored Bronx 18-6 over the ensuing 9:40 to take a 21-12 advantage. The pendulum then swung the Broncos' way, as buckets by Dominique Norman, Graham, and Abraham Richter brought the visitors to within three, 21-18, with 5:24 remaining in the opening half.

Later, in the final minute of the half, the Lions held a 29-23 edge before newcomer Rafael Garcia converted on a layup to bring the Broncos within four. The final bucket of the half came courtesy of Nassau, as Byrd earned a bucket to put his team ahead 31-25. That would be the score as the teams headed into the locker room for halftime.

In the second half, it was all Lions. Nassau scored a whopping 71 points to Bronx's 38, and the Lions connected on 26 of their 39 attempts in the final 20 minutes (66.7 percent), while also draining a mind-boggling 71.4 percent of their heaves from long range (10-14).

For the game, Nassau earned an overall shooting percentage of 50.7 percent (38-75), while also converting on 15 of their 27 attempts from three-point territory (55.6 percent). On the flip side, the Broncos shot well overall (26-60, 43.3 percent), but struggled from downtown without Matthew Candelaria (flu), as Bronx hit on just two of their 11 shots from downtown (18.2 percent).

Nassau held a slim 41-38 edge on the glass, while also tallying 28 assists while the Broncos finished with 20. Bronx did swat five shots to the Lions' two, but Nassau won the turnover battle, committing just 12 miscues, while the Broncos had 23.

Bronx will look to get back into the win column on Saturday afternoon, as the Broncos will take on Roxbury Community at the Alumni Gymnasium. Start-time is scheduled for 2:00pm.
