Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Broncos compete throughout, yet still lose crucial CUNYAC game to Kingsborough, 80-66

The Broncos men's basketball team's CUNYAC playoff hopes took a significant hit this evening, as Bronx suffered an 80-66 loss to the Wave of Kingsborough Community College. With the loss, Bronx dipped to a mark of 3-15 on the 2023-2024 season, while the Wave improved to 7-8, and 3-5 in conference action.

Despite the loss for Bronx, four players scored in double figures, including sophomore sharpshooter Matthew Candelaria, as he connected on five triples, tying for the game-high of 19 points. He also dished four assists and snatched four boards, as well. Herbert Gary (5-8 FG) added 16 points and four boards, and versatile freshman James Wenzel finalized his evening with 12 points, a game-high seven assists, five rebounds, and a team-best four steals. Finally, it was Daniel Armstrong scoring 10 points and collecting five rebounds. Four of Armstrong's 10 points came via two monstrous dunks, one in transition, and the other over a Kingsborough player in the paint.

For Kingsborough, four players scored in double figures, with three of them registering double-doubles. Phillip Harris tied for the game-high of 19 points while snatching a game-best 18 rebounds, and Orion Anyango netted 16 points while grabbing 14 rebounds, dishing four assists, and tallying two steals. Torian Douglas finalized his night with 14 points and six boards, and Chris Jace netted 12 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, tallied a game-high eight steals, dished three assists, and swatted a pair of shots.

In what was a very competitive game for a little over 37 minutes, the Broncos took an early 7-2 lead, thanks to a converted trifecta by Candelaria, a converted layup by Armstrong, and a made jumper by Wenzel. Bronx led for the next 8:57, but by no more than five points until Gary earned a bucket to put the Broncos ahead by six, 23-17. The Wave would then score the next seven to catapult ahead 24-23 with 7:25 remaining in the opening half.

Incredibly, the teams would exchange the lead eight times for the remainder of the half, with neither squad taking an advantage of more than three points. After 40 minutes of action, Kingsborough held a slim 40-38 advantage.

The two CUNYAC foes spent the opening 7:11 of the second half exchanging the lead, doing it six times, in fact, during that aforementioned span. Kingsborough owned a 57-54 advantage with 10:49 remaining, but a converted corner trifecta by Candelaria knotted the game at 57 apiece. Two possessions later, the Wave took the lead for good on a made jumper by Torian. That put Kingsborough ahead 59-57, and the Wave wouldn't relinquish the lead from that point forward.

Inside the final 10 minutes, Kingsborough outscored Bronx 21-9, allowing just two Broncos field goals, a layup apiece by Candelaria and Gary.

The Broncos lost the game despite shooting a higher percentage than their CUNYAC rival. Bronx connected on 41.9 percent of its attempts from the floor (26-62), while Kingsborough earned a conversion rate of just 34.1 percent (30-88). The Wave dominated the glass, snatching 64 boards compared to 37 for the hosts, and Kingsborough doubled-up the Broncos in the steals department, notching 14, while Bronx finished with seven. The Broncos held a modest 19-15 edge in assists, but the Wave won the turnover battle, committing 18 miscues, while Bronx finished with 26.

With just two CUNYAC games remaining, the Broncos will likely need to win both of them, while also getting a little bit of help with the teams just ahead of them losing a game or two, as well.

Bronx returns to the hardwood on Saturday afternoon, as the Broncos will travel to Selden, NY to battle Suffolk County Community College. Start-time is scheduled for 1:00pm.
