Broncos defeated by Colts at Alumni Gymnasium; Matthew Candelaria scores season-high 15 points despite loss

The Broncos' men's basketball team dropped a game on Thursday feeling, falling to Orange County Community College by a score of 102-65. The contest took place at the Alumni Gymnasium in the Bronx. With the defeat, Bronx dipped to 3-13 on the 2023-2024 campaign, while the Colts improved to a mark of 13-4.

Despite the loss for Bronx, sophomore Matthew Candelaria paced the Broncos, scoring a team-high 15 points. He also tied for the team-high of four assists while snatching three rebounds. Herbert Gary connected on seven of his 11 attempts from the floor, recording 14 points and snatching seven boards, and freshman Daniel Armstrong finalized his evening with 10 points, eight rebounds, a game-high four blocks, three assists, and a pair of steals.

Five players scored in double figures for Orange, including Mat Shea, as he drained four shots from downtown, finishing with a game-high 24 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Tyreke Harewood connected on all 10 of his shots from the floor, finalizing his evening with 22 points and five rebounds, and Daniel Lans nearly posted a triple-double, scoring 18 points, collecting 10 rebounds, and recording game-highs of nine assists and seven steals, and it was Jaidyn Rutling and Jordan Blue scoring 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Bronx kept the game close in the early stages, as Kevin Soto's triple 4:56 into the contest pulled the Broncos to within a point, 8-7. It was all Colts from that point forward, however. A 7-0 run by Orange over the ensuing 1:52 put the visitors ahead by eight points (15-7). Later, with the Colts leading 35-26 and 6:22 remaining in the half, the Colts would close the session on a 12-2 run to take a commanding 47-28 advantage at the break. That aforementioned 12-2 spurt was highlighted by Shea's five points, as the youngster converted on a slam dunk as well as a triple.

Orange's 19-point lead at the break held up, as the Colts never led by any less than 19 points throughout the game's final 20 minutes. Orange led by as many as 39 points, before winning the contest by 37. The Colts, who connected on just three of their 12 attempts from long range in the first half, converted on seven out of 14 trifecta launches in the second half (50 percent), using those triples to emphatically pull away from the hosts.

Both teams shot very well from the floor, with the Colts connecting on 53 percent of their attempts from the floor (44-83), and Bronx earning a 42.4 percent conversion rate (25-59). Orange dominated the glass, snatching 46 rebounds to Medgar Evers' 33, and the Colts held a 34-15 edge in the assists category. Orange tallied 15 steals compared to the Broncos' five, but Bronx did swat five shots while the Colts had three. Orange won the turnover battle, committing 15 miscues while forcing 34 Bronx mistakes.

The Broncos will return to the court on Saturday afternoon, as Bronx welcomes Northern Essex Community College to the Alumni Gymnasium. Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 1:00pm.
