Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Tigers use 27 service aces to put away Broncos in straight sets

The Broncos' women's volleyball team continued to search for its first victory of 2023 on Thursday evening, as Bronx dropped a three-setter to the Tigers of Fashion Institute of Technology by scores of 10-25, 5-25, and 13-25. The match took place at the Alumni Gymnasium in the Bronx. With the defeat, the Broncos slipped to 0-11 on the year, while FIT improved to 5-6.

Despite the loss for Bronx, Leslie Ferrer paced the Broncos, finishing with a team-high two kills to go along with eight digs and a service ace. Liany Parrot's nine digs were a match-high, and Abigail Cabrera finished with six digs, a service ace, an assist, and a kill.

For the Tigers, Caitlyn Schildhouse dominated, posting a match-high 10 kills, hitting .269 in the process (10-3-26). Her nine service aces tied for the match-high in that category, as well. Mary Margaret-Griffiths finished with six kills, tied for the match-high with nine aces, and tallied four digs. Charina Kaye Minalo's 19 assists led all players, and Dionysia Kourouklis' five digs were a team-best.

Trailing 11-4 in the opening set, the Broncos rattled off four consecutive points, courtesy of a pair of Tiger hitting errors, a kill by Ferrer, and an ace by Cabrera, to make it 11-8. FIT would dominate the remainder of the set, outscoring the hosts 14-2 the rest of the way to capture set one, 25-10.

The Broncos trailed just 8-5 in the second set, but the Tigers would remarkably finish on a 17-0 run to win it, 25-5. Schildhouse accounted for nine aces during that spurt.

In the third, the Broncos battled back from down 10-2 to pull to within four at 10-6. That aforementioned run featured a Cabrera kill, an attack error by FIT's Nina De Neve, an ace by Ferrer, and an attack error by Schildhouse. The Tigers then put together a 4-0 spurt of their own to pad their advantage, going up 14-6. FIT would never look back from there, going on to win the set by 12 (25-13), and the match 3-0.

FIT used a whopping 27 service aces on its way to victory.

The Broncos will now have four days off before returning to action on Tuesday evening, as Bronx will welcome CUNYAC foe BMCC into the Alumni Gymnasium. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 7:00pm.
