Bronx puts forth valiant effort, but BMCC holds off Broncos in four sets

The Broncos women's volleyball team dropped a CUNYAC match on Tuesday evening, falling to the Panthers of BMCC by scores of 17-25, 19-25, 25-18, and 14-25. The match took place at the Alumni Gymnasium on the campus of Bronx Community College. With the defeat, the Broncos dipped to 0-12 on the season (0-5 CUNYAC), while BMCC improved to 3-5 (3-2 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for Bronx, sophomore Dayanara Segura and freshman Liany Parrot tied for the team-high of three kills. Parrot's 14 digs were also a match-high. Four other Broncos had two kills apiece, including Leslie Ferrer, Keity Liberata, Kaylyn Radcliff, and Abigail Cabrera. Racliff's four service aces were a team-high for Bronx, and Cabrera's six assists led all Broncos.

BMCC was led by Sarah Sellami, as she hit .273 on the evening, on her way to finishing with a match-high 12 kills (12-6-22). She also added three service aces, as well. Cheyenne Gray-Taitt finalized her evening with eight kills, seven digs, and two assists, and it was Andrea Richini contributing seven kills, four service aces, and a pair of digs. Garyana Altidor's nine service aces were a match-high, and her nine digs led all Panthers, and Silvia Chen's 23 assists led all players.

In the opening set of the match, the Panthers held a 5-3 lead, before three straight points by Bronx gave the Broncos a 6-5 edge. A pair of Panther attack errors, and an ace by Radcliff, gave the Broncos that aforementioned lead. The Broncos later led 8-6, before a 9-1 BMCC run catapulted the visitors to a 15-10 lead. Sellami recorded three service aces during that spurt. In that latter stages of the set, the Panthers held a modest 22-17 lead, before kills by Julianna Carrasco and Gray-Taitt, and a service ace by Chen, gave BMCC a 25-17 win in set one.

Set two saw the Broncos hold leads of 6-2, 7-3, 10-7, and 13-10. A 7-0 run by the visitors put BMCC up 17-13, with Altidor registering four aces during that run. Bronx refused to go away, notching three consecutive points to pull to within one at 17-16. That previous run featured an ace by Radcliff, and a kill by Segura. BMCC later held a slim 19-17 lead, before finishing the set on a 6-2 run to win it, 25-19.

Bronx raced out to a commanding 9-2 lead in the third set, powered by a kill apiece by Radcliff and Cabrera, and a service ace by Liberata. After the Panthers had cut their deficit to three, at 10-7, the Broncos responded with five consecutive points to go back up 15-7. Radcliff had two service aces during that spurt. For the remainder of the set, the Broncos kept the Panthers at bay, as the closest BMCC drew was four points down (17-13). One of the highlight points came at 23-17, via a ferocious kill by Parrot.

In the fourth set, with things knotted at four apiece, the Panthers put together a 10-0 run to snatch a commanding 14-4 edge. Altidor had three aces, and Sellami had a pair of kills during that aforementioned run. Bronx did score three straight points (two coming courtesy of a pair of kills by Dayanara) to make it 14-7, but BMCC then scored four straight to go up 18-7, and never looked back, eventually winning the set by 11 (25-14), and the match 3-1.

BMCC registered 24 aces on the evening, while the Broncos totaled nine. Bronx collected 32 digs, while the visitors had 28.

Bronx will return to action on Tuesday, October 10, as the Broncos stay home to battle CUNYAC foe Hostos Community College. Start-time at the Alumni Gymnasium is scheduled for 7:00pm.
