Broncos defeated by Tigers in CUNYAC clash at Alumni Gym

The Broncos' women's volleyball team dropped a CUNYAC match on Tuesday evening, falling to the Tigers of Queensborough Community College by scores of 7-25, 6-25, and 12-25. The match took place at the Alumni Gymnasium in the Bronx. With the defeat, Bronx dipped to 0-10 on the 2023 campaign (0-4 CUNYAC), while the visiting Tigers improved 6-1 overall, while staying unblemished in conference play (3-0).

Despite the loss for Bronx, the Broncos were led by newcomer Liany Parrot, as she finished with a match-high 12 digs to go along with a kill and an assist. Kaylyn Radcliff and Keity Liberata notched six and five digs, respectively, and setter Leslie Ferrer contributed a pair of assists.

The Tigers were paced by Michelle Liu's match-high six kills. She also added four service aces and three digs. Julianne Cossin notched four kills, a match-high 12 service aces, three digs, and two assists, and Ashley Mateo finalized her evening with four kills, four digs, and three aces. Isabel Torres led all players with 10 assists on the night, and Cynthia Reyes' six digs were a team-high.

After Queensborough dominated the opening set, the Broncos held a 4-3 edge in the second, before the Tigers rattled off 10 consecutive points to catapult ahead by a score of 13-4. That aforementioned run was highlighted by Cossin's six service aces. After an attack error by Liu halted the run, Queensborough then scored seven straight to go up 20-5, eventually winning the set 25-6.

In the third set, the visitors scored the first 10 points, but a 7-4 run by the Broncos brought Bronx to within seven, at 14-7. Ferrer contributed a kill during that Broncos spurt. Later, with Queensborough leading 21-12, the Tigers scored the final four points to win the set and the match.

Queensborough notched a whopping 29 service aces on the evening in what turned out to be a big factor in the CUNYAC victory.

Bronx will return to action on Thursday evening, as the Broncos will take on Fashion Institute of Technology. The match will take place at the Alumni Gymnasium, with a start-time of 7:00pm.
