Resilient Broncos battle back, earn tie against Monroe-Bronx

The Broncos' men's soccer team showed tremendous resilience on Tuesday afternoon, battling back from a 2-0 deficit late in the match to earn a 2-2 tie with the Express of Monroe College-Bronx. The exciting match took place at Ohio Field on the campus of Bronx Community College. With the tie, the Broncos are now 0-3-1 on the 2023 campaign, while the Express now sits at 1-2-1.

Monroe-Bronx was able to grab a commanding 2-0 edge by netting a pair of goals in the opening session, but the Broncos would net two tallies inside the final 24 minutes of action to solidify a tie with their Region 15 neighbors.

The Broncos held a solid 24-14 edge in the shots category, but Monroe College-Bronx earned six corner kick opportunities compared to three for the hosts.

Allex Symister got the scoring underway, receiving a pass from Joel David before burying the ball into the net in the 15th minute. Just over 13 minutes later, the Express struck again, courtesy of Lorenz Utz. James Gallagher lofted a soaring corner kick right to Utz, who headed the ball into the goal to give the visitors the 2-0 lead. Despite multiple opportunities for the Broncos to get on the board, Monroe goalkeeper Krit Raj Maharjan kept the hosts at bay. Monroe-Bronx led 2-0 as the opening session came to a close.

The Broncos came out aggressive in the second half, registering seven shots in the opening 16 minutes of the session. Bronx finally was able to slice its deficit in half in the 67th minute, as Moises Gonzalez gathered a ball off a free kick before tapping a pass to Abdulo Mohammed, who slashed the ball into the net to make it a 2-1 match.

Later, with 3:14 remaining in the tense contest, Monroe committed a hand-ball foul, which gave the Broncos a penalty kick opportunity. Midfielder Ashraf Abubakar cashed in on the golden chance, slicing a ball past the outstretched arms of Maharjan to knot the match at two goals apiece. Neither squad was able to register a shot for the remainder of the match, leading to a 2-2 tie.

For the Broncos, Edwin Martinez made four stops on the day, while Maharjan finished with five.

Bronx will return to action on Thursday afternoon, as the Broncos will travel to Middletown, NY to take on Orange County Community College. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 4:00pm.
