Bronx swept by Hostos despite hearty performance in third set

The Broncos women's volleyball team put forth a valiant effort on Tuesday evening, but ultimately fell short, losing to CUNYAC Hostos by scores of 12-25, 10-25, and 27-29. The match took place at the Caimans' "Swamp" in the Bronx. With the defeat, the Broncos slipped to 0-2 overall on the season (0-2 CUNYAC), while the Caimans improved to 2-1 (2-0 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for Bronx, the Broncos were paced by newcomer Keity Liberata, as she posted a team-high five kills, hitting .214 in the process (5-2-14). The freshman also added three digs, as well. Abigail Cabrera chipped in with three kills and team-highs of three assists and two service aces. She also contributed four digs. Leslie Ferrer's nine digs led all players, and Liany Parrot finalized here evening with seven digs and a pair of assists.

For Hostos, Nicole Rodriguez registered a match-high seven kills while hitting .700 (7-0-10). She also added four service aces, as well. Rashel Torres contributed six kills and four aces. Virginia Carrasco piled a match-high six aces to go along with four kills, and setter Samara Correa's 15 assists led all players.

After the Caimans won the first set convincingly, Hostos held a slim 11-8 edge in the second, before notching 14 of the set's final 16 points to snatch a 2-0 lead in sets.

In the third set, Hostos looked poised to put the match away, holding a commanding 17-10 edge, but the Broncos scored seven consecutive points to knot the set at 17-all. Cabrera registered two kills during that aforementioned run, while Parrot recorded an ace. The teams then alternated the next six points, as the set was all tied at 20.

Bronx scored the next three points, courtesy of a kill by Parrot, and consecutive attack errors by Torres and Carrasco. That put the Broncos ahead 23-20, but three consecutive Caiman points knotted the set again (23-23).

The Broncos held set-point twice, leading 24-23 and 26-25, but each time, Hostos answered with consecutive points. Later, with the set tied 27-all, the Caimans finally closed out the set and the match with a pair of points, as Parrot committed a service error, and Rodriguez followed with an ace to clinch the victory.

Both squads struggled with their attack percentages, as Hostos hit just .091 for the evening (23-17-66), and Bronx hit in the negative (11-21-56, -.179). The Caimans held a commanding 20-5 edge in the service aces category, and the Broncos registered 26 digs compared to 22 for the hosts.

Bronx will return to action on Saturday afternoon, as the Broncos will travel to Garden City, NY to take on Nassau Community College (12pm) and Monroe College-Bronx (1:15pm).
