Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Despite valiant effort from Bronx, Senators close out Broncos in final six minutes

Despite a valiant effort, the Broncos' attempt to solidify their first home victory of the 2022-2023 came up short, as Bronx suffered a 95-75 defeat to the Senators of Ulster Community College on Tuesday evening. The contest took place at the Alumni Gym on the campus of Bronx Community College. With the defeat, the Broncos slipped to 1-22 on the season, while Ulster improved to 3-11.

Herbert Gary continued his stellar freshman campaign this evening, as the hard-working big man scored a game-high 33 points (12-23 FG) while also leading all players with 15 rebounds (including eight on the offensive glass). The rookie also dished three assists while swiping three steals. Taijay Good connected on eight of his 18 attempts to finish with 20 points. He also contributed a game-high seven assists, while snatching five rebounds, blocking a pair of shots, and registering two steals. Dominique Norman posted a double-double with 10 points, 12 rebounds, and three assists, and Adrian Ceballos knocked down a pair of trifectas, finishing with six points.

For the Senators, Justin Green was dominant all evening, as he nailed 12 of his 17 attempts, finishing with a team-high 28 points. He also grabbed seven boards and swatted three shots as well. AJ Piedra and Jeremy Figueroa knocked down four triples apiece, with Piedra finishing with 18 points and four dimes, and Figueroa finalizing his evening with 16 points, a game-high five steals, and three assists.

In what was a very competitive contest for the opening 33 minutes, Ulster raced out to a 23-14 edge just 7:53 in. Bronx worked hard to chip away at the deficit, eventually tying the game at 37-all thanks to a converted layup by Damien Sanchez with 3:03 left in the session. After a converted freebee by Green put Ulster back ahead 38-37, a converted three point basket by Ceballos gave the Broncos their first advantage of the evening, 40-38. Bronx would outscore the visitors 7-4 for the remainder of the half to take a 47-42 edge into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, the Broncos and Senators found themselves knotted at 60 apiece, when Ulster would take over the game. A bucket by Naejon Ward gave the Senators a 62-60 edge, and after three missed shots by the Broncos during their ensuing trip down the floor, Ulster added another hoop when Jason Malry converted on a layup to make it 64-60 Ulster.

Later, with the Senators holding on to a 70-65 edge with 6:23 to play, Ulster put together a 13-0 run over a span of 100 seconds to catapult to a commanding 81-65 edge. Ulster would build its lead up to 24 points at one juncture, before advancing for an impressive 20-point victory.

From the span of 10:27 remaining to 3:27 remaining, the Broncos only converted on two field attempts, and that struggle ended up serving as Bronx's undoing.

Ulster shot a blistering 52.8 percent from the floor (38-72), while also connecting on 43.5 percent of its launches from downtown (10-23). On the flip side, the Broncos shot a respectable 42 percent from the floor (29-69), but converted on just 22.7 percent of their trifecta attempts (5-22). Bronx held a 44-38 edge in the rebounding category, but the Senators earned more assists (24 to the Broncos' 21), blocks (five to Bronx's three), and steals (12 compared to 10 for the hosts). Ulster also won the turnover battle, committing 17 miscues, while Bronx had 22.

The Broncos will close out their home portion of the 2022-2023 schedule with one more home game, as Bronx will host BMCC at the Alumni Gym. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 7:00pm.
