Broncos drop last home contest of 2022-2023 campaign, losing to CUNYAC foe BMCC, 80-51

The Broncos' men's basketball team played its home finale on Thursday evening, falling to the Panthers of BMCC in CUNYAC action by a score of 80-51. The game took place at the Alumni Gym in the Bronx. With the defeat, the Bronx slipped to 1-23 on the 2022-2023 campaign (1-9 CUNYAC), while the Panthers improved their record to 10-10 (7-3 CUNYAC). 

Taijay Good led the way for the Broncos, scoring a team-high 13 points while snatching three rebounds. Adrian Ceballos knocked down a pair of triples, as he finished with eight points, three rebounds, and three assists, and Dominique Norman narrowly missed a double-double, as he scored eight points while collecting a team-high 12 rebounds. Herbert Gary netted seven points, grabbed nine boards, dished three assists, and tallied two steals, and Matthew Candelaria added seven points, three caroms, and two steals.

Ysaia Marte paced BMCC, as he scored a game-high 19 points while leading all players with five steals. He also grabbed two rebounds and registered a pair of assists. Daniel Laffitte posted a double-double with 13 points, a game-high 17 rebounds, and five assists, and Jayden Jarrett contributed 12 points and nine rebounds. Jeremiah Cardi finalized his evening with 10 points and five dimes, and Leverson Tulien put together a fine all-around performance, scoring eight points, dishing a game-high nine assists, snatching eight rebounds, and swatting a game-high three shots.

The opening eight minutes of the CUNYAC clash featured eight lead changes, with the final pendulum swing coming when Tulien converted on a layup to give the Panthers an 11-10 advantage. BMCC later took a seven point lead, 19-12, when Laffitte drained a trifecta, but a 6-0 run by Bronx (featuring converted three-point baskets by Candelaria and Norman) pulled the Broncos to within a point (19-18) with 8:24 remaining in the half.

Over the ensuing 1:35, the visitors put together a 9-0 run to take a 28-18 edge. That run featured a bucket by Jarrett, a fastbreak layup by Marte, and five straight points from Laffitte. The Broncos would pull to within seven points twice, but BMCC would eventually take a 36-27 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Panthers used the opening 4:03 of the second half to put considerable distance between themselves and the Broncos, as BMCC started the session on a 15-4 run to take a 51-31 lead. BMCC continued to build its lead, eventually going up by as many as 34 points (74-40) before winning the game by 29.

After shooting a clip below 43 percent in the opening half (15-35, 42.8 percent), the Panthers converted on 54.5 percent of their shots in the final period (18-33), culminating in a total shooting percentage of 48.5 percent for the evening. On the flip side, the Broncos nailed just 32.3 percent of their attempts (21-65). BMCC dominated the glass, snatching 50 rebounds compared to 35 for the hosts, while also dishing 25 assists to Bronx's 10. Both teams stayed under 20 turnovers, with the Broncos committing 19, and BMCC 16, and the Panthers held a 12-8 edge in the steals category.

Bronx will wrap up its 2022-2023 season this evening, as the Broncos will travel to the Falcon Gym Hall in Poughkeepsie, NY to battle Dutchess Community College. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 6:00pm.
