Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Soaring Broncos continue resurgence, dealing Queensborough first CUNYAC defeat, 71-64

The Broncos' men's basketball team continued its stunning season turnaround on Thursday, dealing CUNYAC foe Queensborough its first conference loss, defeating the Tigers by a score of 71-64 at the Alumni Gymnasium in the Bronx. With the victory, the Broncos have now won three consecutive games, including two in a row in CUNYAC play, to improve to 3-7 overall (2-2 CUNYAC). The Tigers dipped below .500 with the defeat (4-5), and suffered their first loss in CUNYAC competition (4-1).

Leading the way for Bronx was newcomer Daniel Armstrong, as he connected on eight of his 16 attempts from the floor, finishing with a game-high 20 points to go along with nine rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Herbert Gary posted a double-double with 13 points, 11 boards, four assists, and three steals, and sharpshooter Taijay Good finished with 13 points, a game-high five assists, and two boards. Roshard Jean Gilles led the Broncos in rebounds on the evening with 12.

Despite the loss for Queensborough, Williams Guzman finalized his evening with a team-best 17 points, and a game-high 18 rebounds. He also added four steals, as well. Yasin Abdur-Rashid scored 16 points, snatched six rebounds, and tallied a game-high five steals, and Joseph Ferguson posted a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds.

The suddenly soaring Broncos trailed 8-7 in the opening 4:01 of the contest, before putting together a 14-0 run over a span of 4:05 to snatch a 21-8 advantage. Armstrong scored seven points during the run, with Gary netting five. Later, with 5:18 remaining in the half, a pair of converted freebees by Armstrong gave Bronx its largest lead of the game, a 14-point edge, 29-15. The Tigers would keep things close, going on a modest 10-5 run to close the half. As the curtain dropped on the opening session, the Broncos held a 34-25 edge.

Queensborough, perhaps feeding off of the momentum it gained at the conclusion of the first half, started the second session on an 11-2 run, tying the contest at 36-all thanks to a converted trifecta by Brandon Sun. Two Broncos possessions later, Bronx claimed the lead again when Good drilled a triple, putting Bronx ahead, 39-36.

Later, with Bronx leading by a score of 41-40 and 12:07 left in the game, the CUNYAC foes would exchange the lead eight times over a span of 5:28, with the latter of those pendulum swings coming when versatile standout James Wenzel connected on a pair of free throws to put the Broncos ahead, 55-54. Over the ensuing 2:54 of action, Bronx would outscore Queensborough 11-1, taking a commanding 66-55 edge with 4:20 left. Things seemed to be in control for the Broncos, but the Tigers refused to go away.

Queensborough spent the next 3:14 roaring back, scoring nine consecutive points to slice to within two, 66-64, with 66 seconds left. Following a Tigers timeout, Taijay Good, who hit the game-winning jumper 48 hours prior, hit a humongous triple with 39 seconds remaining, putting Bronx ahead 69-64. The Tigers wouldn't score again, and the Broncos went on for a thrilling 71-64 victory.

For the evening, the Broncos converted on 35.9 percent of their attempts from the floor (28-78), and earned a conversion rate of 66 percent at the charity stripe (10-15). The Tigers struggled with their touch all evening long, hitting on just 24.4 percent from the floor (21-86) and just 56.3 percent of their chances at the free throw line (18-32). The CUNYAC squads combined to hit on just 11 of their 53 attempts from downtown, with the Tigers nailing four out of 27, and the Broncos five out of 26.

Queensborough dominated the glass despite the loss, out-rebounding the hosts 71-55. The Tigers held a slim 12-11 edge in the steals category, but the Broncos swatted 11 shots compared to three for the visitors. Bronx held a whopping 22-6 advantage in assists, and the Broncos narrowly won the turnover battle, committing 18 miscues, while Queensborough finished with 19.

Bronx will look to make it four consecutive victories this Saturday, as the team will travel to Boston to take on Bunker Hill Community College. Start time for that contest is scheduled for 2:00pm.
