Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Broncos battle back from 13 points down, defeat Bergen 96-89 to earn first victory of '23-'24 campaign

The Broncos' men's basketball team picked up its first victory of the season with a tremendous effort, defeating the Bulldogs of Bergen Community College by a score of 96-89. The contest took place in Paramus, NJ. With the victory, Bronx improved to a mark of 1-7 on the 2023-2024 campaign, while Bergen dipped to 1-6.

Leading the way for Bronx in its victory was Roshard Jean Gilles, as he connected on 10 of his 14 attempts from the floor, knocking down four trifectas in the process, to finish with a team-high 24 points. Workhorse James Wenzel posted a double-double, scoring 18 points, grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds, and tying for the game-high of five assists. Taijay Good scored 11 points, tied for the game-high of five assists, and grabbed four rebounds, and newcomer Daniel Armstrong posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Finally, it was Abraham Richter and Matthew Candelaria finishing with 10 points apiece.

Despite the loss for the Bulldogs, Bergen was paced by Michael Byfield, as he drained 14 of his 30 attempts from the floor, knocking down five triples along the way, to finish with a game-high 33 points. He also snatched seven rebounds, as well. Jaheim Bunting converted on 11 of his 12 attempts from the free throw line, finishing with 17 points, five boards, four dimes, and three steals, and Amire Walker netted 13 points. Ladorien Ladson posted a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 18 rebounds, and Manuel Torres narrowly missed a double-double, scoring eight points while snatching 12 boards.

Bronx trailed 11-5 in the opening 2:25 of action before putting together a 10-3 run over a 91-second span to jump ahead by a score of 15-14. Gary led the Broncos with four points during that spurt. The Bulldogs answered back with a 19-5 run to snatch a 33-20 edge with 9:30 remaining in the first half. Byfield netted six points during the run, with Ladson contributing five.

In what was a first half of runs, the Broncos then outscored the hosts 25-11 over the ensuing 6:48 to take a 45-44 advantage. Bergen would score the next five points after that, before a jumper by Taijay Good brought Bronx to within two, 49-47, as the curtain dropped on the opening half.

The start of the second half featured the Bulldogs registering the first five points, courtesy of a drained jumper by Torres, and a converted trifecta Walker. That pushed Bergen to a 54-47 lead with under 19 minutes to play. Bergen held the lead until 10:32 remaining, when Candelaria's jumper gave Bronx a slim 65-64 edge. That bucket put the Broncos up for Good, as from there, Bronx built a lead as large as 13 points (86-73) before going on to win the game by seven (96-89).

The Broncos were hitting on all cylinders, connecting on 53.9 percent of their attempts from the floor (41-76). On the flip side, Bergen struggled, converting on just 35.8 percent of its shots (29-81). Bronx won the turnover battle, committing just seven miscues compared to 17 for the hosts. Bergen held edges in the rebounding (52-46) and steals (10-4) categories. The teams registered 14 assists apiece.

Bronx will look to make it two consecutive victories this Tuesday, as the Broncos will host the Panthers of the Borough of Manhattan Community College. Start-time for the CUNYAC clash is scheduled for 8:00pm.
