Broncos drop opener to CUNYAC foe Hostos, 89-69; Daniel Armstrong shines with 15 points in debut

The Broncos' men's basketball team began their 2023-2024 campaign on Thursday evening, falling to CUNYAC borough foe Hostos Community College by a score of 89-69. The game took place at the Caimans' swamp in the Bronx. Like Bronx, the game served as the season-opener for Hostos.

Despite the loss for the Broncos, newcomer Daniel Armstrong led the way for his squad, registering a game-high 15 points, connecting on six of his eight attempts from the floor, including three of his four launches from downtown. He also collected three steals while snatching two boards. Veteran Matthew Candelaria connected on three trifectas, finishing with 14 points and a game-high four steals. He also registered three assists while grabbing two rebounds. Herbert Gary scored in double figures, netting 12 points while snatching a team-best six boards. He also contributed four assists, as well. Taijay Good finished with seven points, and newcomer James Wenzel's six assists led all Broncos.

Hostos was paced by Tyrese Conway, as he drilled five of his 10 attempts from the floor, finishing with a team-high 12 points to go along with 10 rebounds, four assists, three steals, and two blocks. Teamo Ebron had a fine all-around game, scoring eight points, pulling down a game-high 11 boards, and registering a game-high seven assists. Ermal Mehmataj connected on three triples, finishing with nine points while snatching six caroms, and Justin Umunakwe netted eight points while snatching three rebounds.

For the game, Bronx converted on just 34.8 percent of its attempts from the floor (24-69), though the team did drain nine of its 21 attempts from long range (42.9 percent). The Broncos collected 27 rebounds, and played unselfish basketball by piling 23 assists. Bronx had 14 steals, but committed 21 turnovers. The Caimans shot a blistering 50 percent from the floor, knocking down 34 of their 68 attempts from the field. The hosts also grabbed 60 rebounds and totaled 29 steals and 27 assists while committing 27 turnovers.

The Broncos will look to get in the win column on Thursday evening, as Bronx will welcome Westchester Community College to the Alumni Gym for its home opener. Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 8:00pm.
