Herbert Gary and Taijay Good score 14 points apiece in Broncos' 81-67 loss to Westchester

The Broncos' men's basketball team dropped its home opener on Thursday evening, falling to the Vikings of Westchester Community College by a score of 81-67. The game took place at the Alumni Gymnasium in the Bronx. With the defeat, the Broncos slipped to a mark of 0-2 on the season, while the Vikings picked up their first victory of the 2023-2024 campaign, improving to 1-2.

Pacing Bronx in its defeat were veterans Herbert Gary and Taijay Good, as those two aforementioned sophomore tied for the team-high of 14 points. Gary also snatched four rebounds, while Good snatched four boards while recording a team-best three assists. Matthew Candelaria knocked down three shots from downtown, finishing with 12 points, and newcomer Daniel Armstrong narrowly missed recording a double-double, finishing with 10 points and nine rebounds. Finally, it was James Wenzel finalizing his night with 10 points.

Eli Hernandez put forth a phenomenal effort for Westchester, knocking down eight of his 12 attempts from the floor, while also draining eight of his nine attempts from the charity stripe, to finish with a game-high 24 points. He also recorded a game-high nine assists, while tying for the game-high of three steals. Aaron Nicholas (9-10 FG) finished with 21 points and four boards, and Wyatt Tiestman finalized his night with 11 points and four caroms. Finally, Mo Fafana's eight rebounds were a team-high.

The Vikings, despite trailing 44-30 at halftime, soared back to outscore the hosts 51-23 over the final 20 minutes of action. Westchester converted on 57.4 percent of its attempts from the floor for the evening (31-54), while the Broncos hit on 43.9 percent of their shots (25-57). Bronx nailed seven of its 15 attempts from long range (46.7 percent), while the Vikings sank only two of their eight (25 percent). Westchester held a slim 34-32 edge on the glass, while also narrowly winning the turnover battle, committing 19 miscues while forcing 20 Broncos mistakes. The Vikings also held advantages in assists (18-8), blocks (6-5), and steals (11-7).

Bronx will return to action on Tuesday evening, as the Broncos will host the Lions of Nassau Community College. Start-time at the Alumni Gymnasium is scheduled for 8:00pm.
