Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Despite strong effort, Broncos unable to slow down Sharks in 89-69 loss at Alumni Gymnasium

The Broncos' men's basketball team put forth a valiant effort on Tuesday evening at the Alumni Gymnasium, but ultimately fell to the Sharks of Suffolk County Community College by a score of 89-69. With the loss, Bronx slipped to 0-6 on the 2023-2024 campaign, while the visitors improved to a mark of 2-2.

Despite the loss for Bronx, sophomore Herbert Gary posted his second double-double of the season, netting 14 points and snatching a game-high 16 rebounds. He also added a pair of steals, as well. Fellow sophomore Taijay Good registered team-highs of 18 points and four assists, while snatching three rebounds, as well. Roshard Jean Gilles scored 12 points while adding three rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench, and sharpshooter Mathew Candelaria added 11 points, three rebounds, and three helpers.

In the victory for the Sharks, Samir Bell was outstanding, finishing with a game-high 38 points while connecting on 15 of his 25 attempts from the floor (60 percent), and four out of his five attempts from the charity stripe. His five assists were a game-high, and he also snatched four rebounds and tied for the game-high of three steals. Kevin Blanchet scored 16 points (5-9 FG, 6-9 FT) while snatching eight caroms and recording three assists. Finally, it was Reese Berry posted a double-double with 15 points and a team-high 14 boards.

Suffolk County Community College scored the first 13 points of the game over a span of 3:13. Bell netted five of the points during that opening spurt. The Broncos responded with an 11-5 run over the ensuing 5:30 to pull to within seven, at 18-11. Good registered six points during that run, with Gary contributing four. The pendulum then swung the visitors' way, as the Sharks scored the next 10 points to take a commanding 28-11 edge with 7:08 remaining in the half.

Despite facing a 17-point deficit, the Broncos battled back. Over a 2:16 span, Gary and Jean Gilles drained jumpers, and Candelaria knocked down a triple, as Bronx closed to within 10, 28-18. Bronx later trailed 38-28 with 1:10 remaining in the half, but Suffolk would close the period on a 6-1 run to take a 44-29 lead into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, Suffolk held a 72-48 advantage with just 6:30 to play, but a ferocious 12-2 Broncos run over a span of 2:13 pulled the hosts to within 14. Good scored nine points during that spurt, including a trifecta to cap the run. Following a Sharks timeout, Suffolk would put the game out of reach, running off seven consecutive points to go up 81-60. The Sharks would go on to win the contest by 20.

Suffolk connected on 46.5 percent of its attempts from the floor (33-71), while also draining 15 of 20 shots from the free throw line (75 percent). On the flip side, Bronx only connected on 31.8 percent of its shots (27-85), while also misfiring on 13 free throws (8-21, 38.1 percent). Suffolk held a slim 53-50 edge on the glass, while also holding edges in assists (21-13) and blocks (8-3). The Broncos registered eight steals compared to seven for the visitors, and Bronx won the turnover battle, committing 15 miscues while forcing 16 mistakes for the Sharks.

The Broncos will now break for the Thanksgiving holiday, and will return to action on Tuesday, as Bronx will travel to Poughkeepsie, NY to battle Dutchess Community College. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 8:00pm.
