Broncos honor sophomore Dayanara Segura before home finale against Hostos

The Broncos' women's volleyball team dropped a CUNYAC match last night at the Alumni Gymnasium, falling to the Caimans of Hostos Community College by scores of 13-25, 11-25, and 23-25. With the defeat, Bronx slipped to 0-13 on the 2023 campaign (0-6 CUNYAC), while the Caimans improved to 4-9 (4-1 CUNYAC).

Prior to the start of the match, the Bronx Community College Department of Athletics took a few moments to honor all of the sophomores playing in the match. The three Hostos sophomores, including Nyla Rivera, Marisabel Pujols, and Nicole Rosas, were all saluted, and each visiting sophomore was presented with a single rose from a member of the Broncos' women's volleyball team.

Following that show of sportsmanship, Broncos sophomore Dayanara Segura was honored, as she was presented with a commemorative action shot picture frame, as well as flowers, in a show of appreciation for her two years of dedication to the institution's women's volleyball program.

Despite the loss for the Broncos, Liany Parrot and Keity Liberata tied for the team-high in kills with three apiece. The two aforementioned Broncos also tied for the match-high of 11 digs, and Parrot's three service aces were a team-best. Setters Leslie Ferrer and Abigail Cabrera each contributed three assists in the defeat, as well.

For Hostos, Pujols' seven kills led all players. She also contributed four digs, as well. Rashel Torres and Rosas each recorded four kills, with Rosas also adding a team-high nine digs. Samara Correa posted match-highs of 15 assists and seven service aces, and Rivera added three kills, five service aces, and four digs.

The first set stayed close in the early stages, with the Caimans holding on to a modest 12-9 advantage. Hostos then rattled off six consecutive points to snatch an 18-9 edge, highlighted by a pair of service aces by Correa. Bronx was able to register three of the ensuing four points of the set to inch to within 19-12, but Hostos finished the set on a 6-1 spurt to put it away.

In the second set, Hostos held a 10-9 lead before scoring 11 straight points to put some serious distance between itself and Bronx, going up 21-9. Correa tacked on additional five service aces during that run, and Pujols added a kill. A Correa service error finally ended the string of points, but the Caimans notched four of the next five points to win the set, 25-11.

Bronx held a slim 9-7 edge in the third set, before a ferocious 8-2 run put the Broncos ahead 17-9. Parrot contributed a kill and a service ace during that spurt, with Liberata also adding a kill. Hostos refused to wane, however, as the Caimans used a 10-2 run to tie the set at 19-all. Torres contributed two kills to highlight that run, and Rivera and Rosas each added a kill.

With the set all knotted at 19, the Broncos scored three straight to take a 22-19 lead. Kaylyn Radcliff notched a kill in the middle of that run. Hostos once again battled back, scoring the next five points to jump ahead 24-22. After Bronx scored a point to stay alive, Pujols finished the match with a kill.

Neither team posted a high conversion rate on its attack attempts, as Hostos hit .052 for the evening (19-15-77), while the Broncos hit in the negative -.155 (9-18-58). The Caimans finished with 15 service aces compared to six for Bronx, and the Broncos registered 42 digs compared to 31 for the visitors.

The Broncos will play their final non-conference match of the season on Thursday night, October 19, as Bronx will take to the road to battle Fashion Institute of Technology. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
