Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Broncos' comeback attempt falls short despite Abdul Mohammed's hat trick

The Broncos men's soccer team came up short despite a ferocious comeback attempt on Tuesday afternoon, falling to the Vikings of Westchester Community College by a score of 5-3. The match took place at Ohio Field in the Bronx. With the loss, the Broncos slipped to 1-5-1 on the 2023 campaign, while the Vikings improved to 5-3.

Westchester used consecutive goals by Carliston Brown at 10:02 and 16:16 to snatch a 2-0 edge. Both of those aforementioned tallies were assisted by Elvin Mejia. Bronx outshot the visitors 13-8 in the opening 45 minutes of action, but it was the Vikings holding a 2-0 advantage as time expired on the opening stanza.

At 56:26 of the match, the visitors increased their lead to a commanding three goals when Miguel Neulaguari slipped home Maximos Matailo's pass. 59 seconds later, Brown notched his third score of the game, slicing home Andrew Martinez' feed to make it 4-0.

All hope appeared lost for the home Broncos, but Bronx refused to wilt despite the deficit. At 65:12, Abdul Mohammed slashed home Ashraf Abubakar's pass to make it 4-1. 61 seconds later, Mohammed would blast home a ball, sending it into the upper left corner of the net to bring the Broncos to within two, at 4-2.

The Vikings got one of those goals back at 71:19, as Jose Perez knocked home a rebound off of his own penalty shot to give Westchester a 5-2 edge. Later, with under 10 minutes remaining, Mohammed and Abubakar linked up again for the Broncos, with Mohammed netting his third tally of the afternoon. With 9:24 remaining, Bronx trailed 5-3. Unfortunately for the Broncos, that would be the closest they would get, as Westchester held on for the victory.

Bronx held a slight edge in shots, registering 24 compared to 22 for the Vikings. The Broncos also earned six corner kick opportunities compared to four for Westchester.

The Vikings' Nicholas Nunez made seven saves on the afternoon, as he earned the victory in net despite allowing the three goals. Bronx's Edwin Martinez made four saves in net for the hosts.

Bronx will return to action on Thursday afternoon, as the Broncos will host BMCC at Pier 40 in New York, NY. Start-time is scheduled for 12:30pm.
