Bronx overwhelmed by Nassau at Alumni Gym; Herbert Gary scores team-high 13 points

The Broncos men's basketball team suffered a home loss on Thursday evening, falling to the Lions of Nassau Community College by a score of 106-36. The contest took place at the Alumni Gym in the Bronx. With the defeat, the Broncos slipped to 1-19 on the 2022-2023 campaign, while Nassau improved to 13-4. 

Despite the loss for the hosts, Herbert Gary led Bronx with a team-high 13 points. He also snatched five rebounds while dropping two dimes and swiping a pair of steals. Taijay Good contributed seven points, four rebounds, a team-high three steals, and two assists, and Matthew Candelaria added six points and three boards.

Six players scored in double figures for the Lions, including Jesse Taylor, as he led all scorers with 14 points while also grabbing thee boards. Timothy Waite and Shane Turner scored 13 points apiece, with Waite contributing three rebounds, and Turner grabbing seven. Donte Howard scored 11 points while grabbing six boards, dishing a game-high six assists, and tallying three steals, and RJ Thompson netted 11 points while swiping three steals. Finally, it was Kervin Lai Fook Francis scoring 10 points and grabbing three rebounds.

Bronx kept things relatively close in the opening 10:30 of play, trailing just 24-12. Nassau then put together a 12-1 run over a span of 4:49 to increase its advantage to 23, 36-13. The Lions' 24-point edge (46-22) at the half was the team's biggest lead of the game.

Nassau completely dominated the second half, outscoring the Broncos 60-14 while shooting 63.8 percent for the session (28-45) and holding Bronx to four field goals. The Lions started the half on a 22-0 run and never looked back, winning the game convincingly, by 70.

For the game, Nassau connected on 52.2 percent of its shots from the floor (47-90), while holding the Broncos to a 23.7 percent conversion rate (14-59). The Lions dominated the glass, snatching 56 rebounds compared to 36 for the hosts, and Nassau also held a commanding 17-6 edge in the steals category. The Lions committed nine turnovers, while Bronx had 26, and Nassau also swatted seven shots to the Broncos' two.

Bronx will return to action on Saturday morning, as the Broncos will take on the Express of Monroe-Bronx at the Barclays Center, home of the NBA's Brooklyn Nets. Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 11:00am.
