Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Broncos shoot 80 percent from free throw line (22-25) to earn Head Coach Warren Thompson first victory

Bronx's men's basketball team picked up a solid victory on Tuesday evening, dominating the second half and turning back LaGuardia College Red Hawks by a score of 74-60. The game was played in Long Island City, NY. The triumph was the first for long time Bronx Community College mainstay and first year Head Coach Warren Thompson, as the Broncos improved to 1-15 (1-6 CUNYAC). LaGuardia dipped to 1-8 (1-5 CUNYAC) with the loss.

Leading the way for the Broncos was standout Taijay Good, as he was sensational, knocking down seven of his 11 shots from the floor, and four of his five attempts from the free throw line, to finish with a game-high 20 points. Additionally, he snatched five rebounds and registered three assists. Michael Melhado connected on three shots from downtown, finalizing his evening with 18 points, and Herbert Gary posted a double-double with 14 points, 11 boards, three assists, and three steals. Ramon Santos IV netting 11 points and swiped a team-high four steals, and Enmanuel Garcia scored seven points, posted game-highs of 12 rebounds and four swatted shots, and added four assists.

Things appeared bleak for the Broncos 11 minutes into the game, as the Red Hawks held a commanding 28-14 edge, and threatened to run away with the game. Bronx, however, had another plans on this night. The Broncos put together a 15-5 run over a span of 6:37 to pull to within four points at 33-29 with 2:21 left in the half. That aforementioned run was highlighted by Garcia and Gary, who scored four points apiece during that spurt. LaGuardia would convert on a pair of free throws and get another bucket to go back up 37-29, but the Broncos would finish the half with four consecutive points to head into the locker room down just four, 37-33.

With 17:29 left in the game, the Broncos took their first lead since the opening six minutes of play, when Garcia would sink a pair of free throws to put Bronx up 40-39. The Red Hawks would respond with an 11-2 run to catapult ahead by a score of 50-41 with 13:42 to go, but the entire momentum of the game shifted from this point forward.

Over a span of 3:10, the Broncos scored 11 straight points to snatch a 52-50 edge. Good accounted for seven of those points during the run. After the Red Hawks tied the game on a bucket by Davon Grady, Melhado would convert on consecutive buckets to give Bronx a 56-52 advantage with 7:09 to play.

LaGuardia's Grady would connect on another basket to slice his team's deficit to two points at 56-54 with 6:50 left, but the Broncos defense was stellar the rest of the way, allowing just two Red Hawks field goals the rest of the way. The Broncos outscored LaGuardia 18-6 over the final 6:50, connecting on all six of their free throw attempts during that span.

For the Red Hawks, Jonathan Ferguson converted on five shows from beyond the arc, finishing with a team-high 15 points. He also tallied two assists, as well. Davon Grady (4-4 FT) added 12 points, and Timothy Arthur posted a double-double, scoring 11 points, snatching 10 boards, and adding four assists. Finally, it was Nfaly Kake contributing 10 points, five assists, four rebounds, and three steals.

The Broncos converted on 42.6 percent of their attempts from the floor (23-54) compared to a 38.7 percent conversion rate for the hosts (24-62), but it was the free throw shooting efficiency that proved to be the difference in this one. Bronx was excellent at the line, nailing 80 percent of its attempts there (22-25), while the Red Hawks struggled mightily, hitting only five of their 14 freebees (35.7 percent). The Broncos held a respectable 41-32 edge on the glass, while also swatting two shots to the Red Hawks' two. LaGuardia did win the turnover battle, committing 17 miscues, while Bronx had 20.

Bronx will look to make it two consecutive victories on Thursday evening, as Bronx will take to the road to battle Orange County Community College. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 6:00pm.
