Men's soccer team's home opener spoiled as Sharks pull away in second half

The Broncos men's soccer team suffered its second consecutive defeat on Tuesday afternoon, falling to the Sharks of Suffolk County Community College by a score of 9-1. The match served as Bronx's home opener, taking place at Ohio Field. With the loss, the Broncos dipped to 2-2 on the 2022 campaign, while the Sharks improved to 6-2.

Things stayed respectable in the opening stanza. Suffolk did score the first two goals of the afternoon, the first coming off the foot of Kaanturk Akgul (assisted by Hever Reyes and Angel Perez) at 12:32, and the second coming courtesy of a head by Jonathan Mejia (from Luke Augeri) at 22:32.

Bronx got on the board shortly after Akgul's goal, as just 1:56 later, Asaa Adiki blasted home a shot to cut the Broncos' deficit in half at 2-1. That score would hold until 6:07 later, when the Sharks' Luis Duarte tapped a ball home (Reyes and Sam Gonzaga tallied assists) at 30:35 to put Suffolk up 3-1. Neither team scored over the final 14:25 of the opening session, as the Sharks took a two goal advantage into the break.

In the second session, Suffolk scored six goals, the last four by Erick Gruver who was completely unstoppable, as it only took him 29:36 to register those four tallies. Saul Salinas Huaman collected two assists on Gruver's goals, while Duarte added one. Suffolk's other two goals in the second half came courtest of Reyes (from Brandon Leal) and Emre Can (from Mejia).

The Sharks' Cesar Cruz picked up the victory in net despite logging just 25:52 of game action. He stopped one shot and allowed one goal. Chris Ascencio logged 64:08 in relief of Cruz, regsitering two saves and not allowing a goal. Luis Chavez picked up the loss in net for the Broncos, despite making nine saves.

Bronx will return to action on Thursday afternoon, as the Broncos will travel to Brooklyn, NY to take on CUNYAC foe Kingsborough Community College. The conference clash will begin at 4:00pm.
