Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Broncos edged by Red Hawks in final home contest of calendar year 2022

The Broncos men's basketball team played 40 tough minutes on Thursday evening, but ultimately fell to the Red Hawks of LaGuardia Community College by a score of 89-84 at the Alumni Gymnasium. With the loss, Bronx slipped to 0-13 on the 2022-2023 campaign (0-5 CUNYAC), while LaGuardia improved to 1-8 (1-3 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for Bronx, Enmanuel Garcia put together a stellar all-around game, posting a double-double with 17 points and game-high 17 rebounds. He also registered four assists, swatted a game-high four shots, and tallied three steals. Herbert Gary also posted a double-double, finishing with 18 points, 13 boards, and a pair of assists, and speedy guard Taijay Good contributed team-highs of 19 points and five assists, to go along with three boards and two steals. Finally, Michael Melhado finalized his evening with 12 points.

In the victory for the Red Hawks, Justin Greene was dominant all evening, posting game-highs of 30 points and seven assists, to go along with five rebounds and four steals. Steven Estevez scored 18 points, snatched five boards, and added five dimes, and Molly Mehmetaj contributed 12 points, three rebounds, a pair of assists, and two swatted shots.

Things looked promising for the Broncos in the early stages, as Bronx used the opening 2:24 of the contest to race out to a 7-0 lead, thanks to a converted three-point basket and a pair of free throws by Garcia, and a made layup by Gary. LaGuardia responded with a 10-0 run over the ensuing 44 seconds to grab a three-point lead, but Melhado halted the run with a trifecta to knot the game at 10 apiece.

Over the span of the next 13:14 of action, neither team would take more than a four point advantage, and the contest would feature five ties, with the latter of those ties coming when Ramon Santos IV would finish a fastbreak layup to even the score at 31-all with 3:00 remaining in the half.

The game continued to stay tight, with the Red Hawks going up by four points (39-35) with 1:28 left in the session, before taking a 41-38 edge into the locker room at halftime.

LaGuardia used a 16-5 run to start the second half to catapult to a 57-43 advantage with 15:51 to play. That aforementioned spurt featured nine points from Greene, and seven points from Estevez. The Broncos refused to go quietly, though, pulling to within four (60-56) with 11:32 remaining, before a 20-11 Red Hawks run put LaGuardia up 80-67 with 5:18 to go. LaGuardia appeared to be in prime position to solidify its first victory of the campaign, but Bronx refused to waive the white flag.

A converted jumper by Good made it 80-69, and after a Greene turnover, Gary cleaned up a Good miss, laying the ball in to slice the Red Hawks' edge to nine points at 80-71. Following a 30-second timeout by the visitors, LaGuardia responded with a Greene made jumper to go up 82-71 with 3:55 remaining on the clock. A 6-0 Broncos run over a span of 1:11 (highlighted by four converted freebees by Good) made it 82-77 Red Hawks with 2:47 left.

Bronx was able to get to within two, 86-84, with 28 seconds remaining, but the Red Hawks sank three of four free throws, and the Broncos misfired on two trifectas the rest of the way, as the Red Hawks held on for a five-point win (89-84).

LaGuardia connected on 50.7 percent of its attempts from the floor (35-69), while the Broncos hit on 41.1 percent of theirs (30-73). The Red Hawks won the turnover battle, committing just 14 miscues while forcing 17 for the hosts. Bronx dominated on the glass, snatching 48 boards while LaGuardia notched just 32, and both teams had seven blocks apiece.

The Broncos will return to action on Saturday afternoon, as Bronx will travel to Newark, New Jersey for a contest at Essex County College. Start-time is scheduled for 2:00pm.
