Monroe-Bronx's speed too much for Broncos as Express solidifies 105-57 victory

The Broncos men's basketball team dropped a home contest last night, falling to the Express of Monroe-Bronx by a score of 105-57 at the Alumni Gymnasium. With the defeat, the Broncos slipped to 0-12 on the 2022-2023 campaign, while the Express improved to 8-5.

Despite the loss for Bronx, Ramon Santos IV connected on six of his eight attempts, finishing with a team-high 14 points to go along with a pair of assists. Herbert Gary (5-7 FG) added 13 points and seven rebounds, and Taijay Good contributed 12 points, two rebounds, and a pair of steals.

Six Express players registered double-digit points on the evening, with Chad Duke leading all scorers with 17 points, four steals, three assists and three rebounds. Andrew Molina netted 13 points, registered three dimes, and tallied three steals. Oramis Figuereo and Quame' Smith scored 12 points apiece, with the former adding two rebounds, and Smith snatching five rebounds. Babacar Niang netted 10 points, grabbed six rebounds, and swatted three shots, and Jovan Young added 10 points, six assists, two rebounds and two steals.

Monroe-Bronx held a commanding 24-4 edge just 7:23 into the contest. The Broncos attempted to chip away at that aforementioned deficit, pulling to within 14 points (28-14) off a trifecta by Good, but that was the closest the Broncos would get for the remainder of the evening.

With 7:42 remaining in the first half, and the Express leading 34-19, Babacar Niang scored six consecutive points to increase his team's lead to 21 (40-19). Monroe Bronx continued to push, building a lead as big as 29 points, before heading into the locker room up 58-32.

Jovan Young converted on a fast break layup to start the second session, and that was followed by Abubakar Kromah completing a three point play, as Monroe-Bronx extended its advantage to 31. The Express would proceed to put together another 10-point run to extend the lead to 41 points, including two fast break dunks from Molina. Monroe-Bronx would later lead by as many as 51, before solidifying an impressive 48-point road win.

Monroe-Bronx shot a blistering 58.7 percent from the field (44-75), while also connecting on 16 of its 19 attempts from the charity stripe (84.2 percent). Conversely, the Broncos nailed just 33.9 percent of their attempts from the floor (20-59) while hitting 12 of 18 free throws (66.7 percent). The Express dominated the glass, snatching 44 rebounds compared to 30 for the hosts, and Monroe-Bronx committed just 14 turnovers while forcing 29 Broncos mistakes. Finally, it was the Express holding significant edges in the steals (20-9) and blocks (6-1) categories.

The Broncos will return to action Thursday evening, as Bronx will welcome LaGuardia Community College to the Alumni Gymnasium for a CUNYAC clash. Start-time is scheduled for 8:00pm.
