Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Broncos' Herbert Gary, Taijay Good dazzle despite Broncos' two home losses to start 2022-2023 campaign

The Broncos men's basketball team opened up its 2022-2023 campaign with a pair of home defeats this week, falling to CUNYAC foe Hostos Community College by a score of 97-78 this past Thursday, before dropping a 68-52 decision to the Bulldogs of Bunker Hill Community College earlier this afternoon. Both games took place at the Alumni Gym in the Bronx.

In front of a capacity crowd Thursday evening against Hostos, the Broncos put forth a valiant effort, but were ultimately defeated by their borough conference rivals. Despite the loss for Bronx, the Broncos were paced by freshman Herbert Gary, as he put forth a monster effort with game highs of 27 points (10-20 FG) and 20 rebounds. Taijay Good added 13 points (5-5 FT) and a team-high four assists, and Ludwin Rosa and Enmanuel Garcia contributed 12 points apiece.

Hostos was led by Marquise Paulin, as the youngster scored a team-high 16 points (6-12 FG) while collecting a game-high eight assists. He also finished with five caroms and four steals, as well. Donta Sanders netted 15 points while adding five assists and swiping four steals, and David Honore registered a team-high 14 rebounds and game-highs of five steals and five blocks to go along with 12 points. Justice Carrington posted a double-double with 11 points and 12 boards, and Nyhem Garret finished with 10 points.

The two primary reasons the Broncos fell short in this one was their lack of conversions from downtown as compared to the Caimans, as Bronx nailed just two of its 12 attempts from beyond the arc (16.7 percent), while Hostos drilled 44 percent of its shots from long range (11-25). Additionally, the Caimans protected the basketball very well, committing just 13 turnovers in a hostile environment as compared to 29 for the hosts. The Caimans also held a 45-27 edge on the glass, as well.

In Saturday's defeat against Bunker Hill Community College, the Broncos were paced by Good, as he led all scorers with 22 points (8-15 FG, 3-6 3PT FG). He also added four rebounds and a pair of steals. Herbert Gary posted his second double-double in as many games, netting 12 points while snatching 12 boards, and Michael Melhado added seven points.

For the Bulldogs, Angel Price-Espada led the way for his crew, knocking down seven of his 18 attempts from the floor on his way to 19 points. His five assists were also a team-high, as well. Osa Iriowen added 12 points and team-highs of nine rebounds and five steals, and it was Trahe Qualls putting forth a solid all-around effort, scoring nine points, snatching six boards, blocking three shots, and swiping two steals.

In this one, Bronx fell behind 8-0, missing its first 11 attempts from the floor and not scoring until 6:22 into the contest. The Broncos trailed by as many as 15 in the opening session, and were able to get within nine (26-17) with 3:03 left in the half, but Bunker Hill finished the session on a 9-4 run to take a 35-21 edge into the locker room at halftime.

The Bulldogs took their biggest lead, a 43-23 advantage, with 18:07 remaining in the game when Iriowen converted on a fastbreak. Bronx refused to go quietly, though, holding Bunker Hill scoreless over the ensuing 5:21 of action while going on an 8-0 run to pull to within 12 at 43-31 with 12:51 to go.

The Bulldogs would later go back ahead by as many as 18 (57-39) when Price-Espada nailed a triple with 7:40 to go, and Bunker Hill appeared to have the game in control, but another surge by the Broncos would make the game interesting. Bronx would put together a 13-4 run over the next 4:54 to slice its deficit to single digits, 61-52, with 2:46 remaining. That aforementioned spurt included a pair of three pointers by Good, four points by Gray, and a trifecta from Melhado. Following that 13-4 run, Bunker Hill would essentially put the game out of reach on its next possession when Price-Espada hit a backbreaking three-point basket to make it 64-52, and the Bulldogs never looked back, eventually winning by 16.

Neither team shot the ball particularly well on the afternoon, and both squads failed to crack 70 points. Bunker Hill shot just 37 percent overall (27-73) while misfiring on 30 three pointers (9-39) and connecting on just 50 percent of its attempts from the charity stripe (5-10). The Broncos nailed just 32.8 percent of their attempts (19-58), including a conversion rate of just 26.7 percent from downtown (4-15). Bronx also missed 11 free throws, as well (10-21).

Bunker Hill held a slight edge on the glass, snatching 51 rebounds to Bronx's 42. The Bulldogs swiped 16 steals to the Broncos' nine, and the teams were nearly even in the turnovers category, with Bunker Hill committing 25, the Broncos 27.

The Broncos will now have four days off before starting a four game road trip, as Bronx will travel to the Viking Gymnasium in Valhalla, NY on Thursday to take on Westchester Community College. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 7:00pm.
