Atanga, Broncos defense deny Monroe-Bronx in 67-62 road win

Three Broncos score in double figures

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Blaise Atanga totaled game-highs of 21 points, 15 rebounds, and five steals in 40 minutes as the visiting Broncos earned a 67-62 win at Monroe-Bronx Tuesday night in Region XV men's basketball play.
 Michael Morgan
The Broncos stifling defense held the Express to 33.8 percent shooting and 29.6 percent (8-27) from three-point range, where the guests, meanwhile, connected on 6-13 attempts for a sweltering 46.2 percent.

After falling down 14-5 out of the gate, Bronx took off on an 18-7 run to claim a 23-21 lead on a Malik Dale layup, and the Broncos clung to a 32-31 lead at intermission.

Bronx seized control out of the break, as three-pointers form Dale and Atanga, followed by an Atanga fast-break dunk, gave the Broncos their largest lead at 42-34 with 15:14 left. A nine-point lead was cut to two at the 2:00 mark on an Isaiah Stone triple, but Bronx would hit 5-8 free throws, including a pair from Michael Morgan to up the margin to put the game out of reach at 67-60, and the Broncos prevailed 67-62.

The reigning CUNYAC Player of the Week, Morgan totaled 18 points on 5-7 shooting at the stripe, adding a team-best five assists. Fellow freshman Enmanuel Garcia rounded out a trio in double figures with 10 points and nine rebounds off the bench.

Dale and Ramon Santos IV chipped in with nine and eight points, respectively, as the Broncos improved to 4-7.

Led by Atanga's 15, Bronx controlled the glass, 45-38, holding the Express to six second-chance points.
