Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Broncos stun nationally-ranked Hostos (No. 9 in NJCAA) 96-93; Tilquan Rucker eclipses 1,500 career points in win

The Broncos men's basketball team picked up a huge victory on Thursday evening, upsetting CUNYAC foe Hostos Community College by a score of 96-93. Coming into the contest, the Caimans had been playing tremendous basketball, as they were ranked No. 9 in the NJCAA, and having won five in a row. With Bronx's upset win this evening, the Broncos improved to 11-15 on the 2019-2020 campaign, and finalized their CUNYAC portion of the schedule at 6-2. Hostos dipped to 18-6 overall with the defeat, and 6-1 in conference action.

After an uncharacteristic quiet performance against Monroe-Bronx two days prior, standout Tilquan Rucker was back to his dominant self, and against a terrific opponent to boot, as the sophomore guard netted a game-high 38 points, putting him over the 1,500 point mark for his Broncos career (now at 1,531 points). He connected on 13 of his 30 attempts from the floor, while registering a game-high six steals, three rebounds, and three assists. Malik Hamilton netted 20 points while snatching eight rebounds and three dimes, and William Paradise contributed 14 points, a game-high eight assists, five rebounds, and three steals. Finally, it was Steven Glover finalizing his evening with 14 points, six boards, four assists, and two steals.

Despite the loss for the Caimans, Hostos was paced by Korey Williams, as he scored a game-high 23 points while drilling seven of his 15 attempts from the floor. He also registered a team-high five assists, tied for the team-high of four steals, and added five rebounds. Reggie Quezada netted 21 points, snatched six boards, collected four steals, and piled four dimes, and Tyron Smith posted a double-double, scoring 19 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

The Broncos won the contest despite the Caimans posting a much better shooting percentage and Hostos dominating the glass. Hostos connected on 50.7 percent of its attempts from the floor (34-67), while Bronx converted on just 31 of 78 shots (39.7 percent). The Caimans held a commanding 54-38 edge in the rebounding department, while also narrowly winning the turnover battle, committing 20 miscues compared to 22 for the Broncos. Bronx was locked in at the line, hitting 27 of its 34 attempts from the stripe (79.4 percent), while Hostos hit 18 of its 23 from the free throw line (78.3 percent).

Bronx will return to action on Sunday afternoon, February 16, as the Broncos will take on Touro College in a final tuneup for the upcoming CUNYAC Community College Men's Basketball Tournament. The game will take place at Baruch College, with a start-time of 12:00pm.
