Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Broncos nearly pull off incredible comeback, falling to Express, 78-76; Five sophomores honored prior to contest

The Broncos men's basketball team nearly pulled off a comeback for the ages, but Bronx ultimately fell short, falling to the Express of Monroe College-Bronx by a score of 78-76. The game served as the Broncos' regular season finale at the Alumni Gym, and with the defeat, Bronx dipped to a mark of 10-15 on the 2019-2020 campaign. On the flip side, the Express won their fourth straight game, improving to a mark of 9-15 on the year.

Prior to the start of the game, the Bronx Community College Department of Athletics will honor the men's basketball team's five sophomores, Tilquan Rucker, Malik Hamilton, Steven Glover, William Paradise, and Abudrahan Jawara, celebrating their two years of dedicated service to the program. Each student-athlete received a commemorative picture frame in a gesture of appreciation. The student-athletes were joined by their families and friends for pre-game photos on the court.

Despite the loss this evening for Bronx, the Broncos were paced by offensive sensation Malik Hamilton, as the standout poured in 31 points, connecting on five shots from downtown, and 13 of his 23 shot attempts overall. He also snatched seven boards, registered three assists, and added three steals. Steven Glover netted 13 points while grabbing seven rebounds and collecting three assists, and William Paradise and Tilquan Rucker contributed 10 points apiece. Abdurahan Jawara snatched a game-high 17 rebounds to go along with his eight points, and newcomer Ivancile Jules palyed 13 minutes, scoring four rebounds, snatching eight boards, and adding three assists.

In the victory for Monroe College-Bronx, Adonis Robinson paced the Express with a team-high 18 points. He also collected five rebounds and contributed a pair of steals. Jameek Brown drilled six of his eight attempts from the floor to finish with 16 points. He also added a game-high eight dimes, to go along with four rebounds. Kevon Wiggins had a nice all-around performance, finishing with 13 points, a game-high nine steals, seven rebounds, and five assists, and Isiah Ryan finalized his evening with 11 points, six rebounds, two dimes, and two steals.

In what was a very competitive opening 20 minutes of basketball, the biggest lead taken by either team was seven, as the Broncos held an advantage of 26-19 with 8:13 remaining in the opening half. Later in the half, the teams were knotted at 30, before the Broncos held four point leads of 34-30 and 38-34. Bronx would eventually head into the locker room with a slim 43-41 advantage.

The opening 7:45 of the second half belonged to the Express, as Monroe College-Bronx outscored the Broncos 22-5 over that time frame to grab a commanding 62-48 lead. Bronx was able to use an 8-0 run to slice its deficit to six (62-56), but the Express would once again respond, using a 10-2 spurt to jump back ahead, 72-58, with just 6:52 remaining.

Much like the narrative of the rest of the season, the Broncos refused to quit. After finding themselves down 75-62 with just 3:41 left, Bronx rallied. Hamilton would connect on a three-point basket with 3:10 left, and 30 seconds later, Paradise would sink a layup to make it 75-67 Express. Glover's basket 18 seconds later pulled Bronx to within six, and that's the way the score would stay until only 1:27 remained on the clock, when Rucker would drill a pair of free throws.

After neither squad scored over the ensuing 1:03, Glover would draw a foul with 24 seconds remaining. He would proceed to sink two free throws, pulling the Broncos to within two (75-73) and putting the team on the precipice of an incredible comeback. On Monroe College-Bronx's next possession, Isiah Ryan would get fouled. He would connect on the first free throw, before missing the second one. The rebounded would be collected by Jameek Brown of the Express, however. He would proceed to nail two free throws. On the Broncos final possession, Hamilton would nail a three-point shot at the buzzer, but Monroe College-Bronx would still hold on to win the game by two points.

Monroe College-Bronx connected on 45.7 percent of its shot attempts for the night (32-70), while the Broncos were just a cut below, hitting on 31 of their 72 shot attempts (43.1 percent). The Express registered 19 assists compared to 14 for Bronx, and Monroe College-Bronx won the turnover battle by a slim margin, committing 21 miscues compared to 23 for the Broncos. The rebounding column output displayed nearly identical numbers, with Bronx holding a 47-45 edge over the Express there, and both teams struggled mightily from the line, with each squad misfiring on nine of 17 attempts from the stripe (47.1 percent).

The Broncos will wrap up their up their regular season portion of the schedule on Thursday evening, as Bronx will travel to Hostos Community College for a CUNYAC contest against the Caimans. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 8:00pm.
