Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Broncos offense erupts for eight opening day goals as Bronx dominates Middlesex, 8-3

The Broncos men's soccer team started its 2019 campaign with a convincing victory, dominating the Blue Colts of Middlesex by a score of 8-3 in a game that took place at Ohio Field in the Bronx. With the victory, Bronx recorded its first opening day victory since 2014, while the Blue Colts slipped to 2-1 on the season.

After 22 minutes of scoreless soccer, Bronx took control of the match, netting three goals in the final 22:18 of the opening session to take a commanding lead. Veteran Shaibu Musah tallied the first goal, as he exemplified great teamwork with Andaine Campbell and Robert Affulto find the back of the net. Afful then accounted for the Broncos' second goal at 31:23 (assisted by newcomer Gerson Gonalez), and first year Bronco Ruddy Segura netted Bronx's third goal at 41:56 (from Prince Abotsi). As the teams broke for halftime, Bronx held a 3-0 edge.

The Broncos continuined their offensive push when the second stanza began, as Bronx's Amadou Dieng netted his first goal of the season at 49:48. Afful assisted on the goal, as the Broncos increased their lead to 4-0. Middlesex finally got on the scoreboard five minutes later (at 53:48) when Olivier Desravines scored from about 10 fee out off a cross pass from Andrew Oross to cut the Blue Colts' deficit to three at 4-1.

From there, Bronx put the match out of reach, netting four unanswered goals to catapult to an 8-1 advantage. Those four goals were accounted for by Afful (assisted by Claude Siabe), two by Abdul Maradi (from Musah, and Siambe, respectively), and the final one by Musah (from Abotsi).
The Blue Colts added two late goals, unassisted tallies by Oross (at 78:57) and Fabrizzio Reyes (at 86:56).

Bronx held slim edge in the shots category, recording 27 to Middlesex's 26. The Blue Colts committed 13 fouls, while the Broncos were whistled for 10, and Bronx attempted five corner kicks compared to three for Middlesex.

The Broncos will look to make it two consecutive victories to start the season on Thursday, as they take to the road to battle Bergen. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 4:00pm.
