Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Broncos stage comeback from 12 points down, defeating Lions of Raritan Valley 104-91 in overtime

The Broncos men's basketball team sent the fans at the Alumni Gym home happy once again, as today, Bronx rallied from a 12-point first half deficit to defeat the Lions of Raritan Valley Community College by a score of 104-91 in overtime. With the triumph, the Broncos have now won five games in their past seven tries to improve to 6-8, while the Lions slipped to 6-7 on the 2019-2020 campaign.

Tilquan Rucker was masterful for Bronx in its victory, as he connected on 11 of his 18 shots from the floor to finish with a game-high 38 points. The sharpshooter drilled four of his six attempts from downtown, while also snatching seven rebounds, registering a team-high of six assists, and tallying a game-high four steals. Malik Hamilton posted yet another double-double, scoring 26 points and snatching 10 boards, and Steven Glover played extremely well, connecting on nine of his 11 attempts from the floor to finish with 18 points. He also grabbed a team-best 12 rebounds while swatting two shots. Finally, it was Brian Urena contributing 12 points, eight rebounds, and a game-high three blocks.

Despite the loss for Raritan Valley Community College, Rick'Keem Mixson was sensational, as he posted game-highs of 32 points and 13 rebounds. He also added four assists, as well. Michael DelSantro did most of his damage early, scoring 21 of his 24 points in the first half. He also added five rebounds and three assists, and Robert Terry contributed eight points and a game-high seven assists.

Bronx raced out to an early 6-0 edge behind a basket and converted free throw from Rucker, and a made three point basket from Hamilton. The Lions answered back with an 11-2 run to catapult ahead by a score of 11-8. Raritan Valley spent the ensuing 12:14 building its advantage, and the Lions eventually took its biggest lead of the afternoon, 37-25, with 4:18 remaining in the opening half.

The Broncos kept themselves within arm's length of Raritan Valley, putting together a 14-6 run to close the half, pulling to within four (43-39) as the teams entered the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, the Lions appeared to have things in control, leading the Broncos by a score of 71-60 with just 8:25 remaining. Bronx, though, showed its recent maturity in late game situations by battling back in a big way. William Paradise drained a pair of free throws, and on Bronx's next possession, Hamilton drained a layup as the Broncos closed to within seven at 71-64. On the Broncos next trip down the floor, Rucker would split a pair of freebees to make it 71-65, but Pierce Kokosinski of the Lions would convert on a layup to make it 73-65. The Broncos would then put together a 9-0 run, capped off by good layup by Rucker to make it 74-73 Bronx with 3:58 to go.

The Broncos would eventually grab an 80-75 lead, but an 8-2 Lions run put Raritan Valley back ahead 83-82 with 32 seconds remaining. On the Broncos next and final possession, Rucker would get fouled before splitting a pair of shots from the charity stripe to tie the game at 83 apiece. Following that, Raritan Valley's Mixson would misfire on a three-point basket, with Glover collecting the rebound as time expired on regulation. The game would head into overtime.

In the extra session, Bronx absolutely dominated, outscoring the Lions 21-8 while converting on nine of its 11 attempts from the floor in the process. Glover played like a man on a mission in the extra session, converting on all five of his shot attempts. He also registered an assist on Urena's thunderous dunk as time expired. The slam served as the exclamation point for what was arguably the Broncos most exciting victory of the season to date.

The Broncos were the more efficient team shooting the basketball, as Bronx connected on 37 of its 78 shots from the floor (47.4), compared to a 41.7 percent conversion rate for the Lions (35-84). Bronx was also the more opportunistic team on defense, as the Broncos registered nine steals and seven blocks while forcing 14 turnovers. On the flip side, Raritan Valley tallied just three steals and one block, while forcing just eight Bronx miscues. The Lions held a slim edges in the rebounding department (47-46) and assists category (22-19).

The Broncos will return to action on Saturday, January 4, as they will travel to Bayside, NY to take on Queensborough in a CUNYAC contest. Start-time is scheduled for 3:00pm.
