Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Broncos continue recent surge, holding off pesky Mad Titans 85-81 to register fourth win in six tries

The Broncos don't care how they register their victories, they're just satisfied that the number on the left side of the record continues to increase. Earlier this evening, Bronx won for the fourth time in six tries, outlasting a stingy ASA-Manhattan team by a score of 85-81 at the Alumni Gym. With the win, the Broncos improved to a mark of 5-8 on the season, while the Mad Titans fell to .500 on the year (5-5).

In the victory for Bronx, Tilquan Rucker was everywhere, as he posted game-highs of 31 points (11-20 FG) and seven steals. He connected on five three-point baskets on the evening, while also snatching six boards, registering four assists, and blocking a shot. Steven Glover finalized his night with 14 points, seven boards, a pair of dimes, and two blocks, and Malik Hamilton contributed 14 points while collecting three rebounds, tallying three steals, and adding a pair of assists. Finally, it was Brian Urena finishing with 13 points, three assists, three rebounds, three swatted shots, and three steals.

Despite the loss for ASA-Manhattan, the Mad Titans were led by Joseph Hicks, as he connected on eight of his 15 attempts from the floor, finishing with a team-high 18 points. He also added six rebounds to his line, while adding three dimes, as well. Justin Wilson drained all four of his free throw attempts, eventually finishing with 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals, and Shemar Mason and Fred Rijos finished with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

The Broncos looked poised to run away with the game in the early stages, as Bronx led by as many as 17 (31-14) with 10:05 remaining in the opening half. ASA-Manhattan battled, though, owning the final 10 minutes of the session by outscoring the Broncos 27-18 to slice Bronx's advantage to 49-41 as the teams entered the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, Bronx led 76-65 with 4:53 to go, but the Mad Titans got to within four points (81-77) with 2:04 remaining on the clock. The score remained that way until the 0:12 mark, when ASA-Manhattan's Justin Wilson converted on a layup to make it 81-79. On Bronx's next possession, Tilquan Rucker got fouled, and he would drain a pair of freebees to put the Broncos ahead 83-79 with 10 seconds remaining.

The Mad Titans refused to quit, as Joshua Been then sank a jumper in the paint with four seconds remaining to draw his team within two points at 83-81. The Broncos would then inbound to Brian Urena, who would draw a foul with two seconds remaining. Needing to drain two free throws to ice the game, Urena would do just that, essentially propelling Bronx to an 85-81 triumph with the two clutch makes.

Bronx shot 46 percent from the floor for the game (29-63), while the Mad Titans shot just a bit better, converting on 31 of their 67 attempts (46.3 percent). The Broncos won the game despite being dominated on the glass, as ASA-Manhattan snatched 50 boards compared to 29 for Bronx. Bronx did win the turnover battle convincingly, forcing 31 Mad Titan mistakes while committing 21 turnovers. The Broncos shared the ball well, registering 20 assists as a team, compared to 13 for ASA-Manhattan.

The Broncos will look to continue their recent winning ways this Friday, as Bronx will play its final game in calendar year 2019, with the opponent being Raritan Valley Community College. The contest will take place at the Alumni Gym, with a start-time of 4:00pm.
