Broncos put forth hearty effort, but fall to Queensborough Tigers 55-33 in CUNYAC action


The Broncos women's basketball team suffered a defeat on Thursday evening, falling to CUNYAC foe Queensborough by a score of 55-33 at the Alumni Gym. With the defeat, Bronx slipped to 0-10 on the season (0-4 CUNYAC), while the Tigers solidified their first victory, improving to 1-11 (1-3 conference action).

Despite the loss for Bronx, Ashley Soto scored 15 of her team-high 16 points in the second half. She also grabbed six rebounds, including five on the offensive end, while also tying for the game-high of four steals, and registering a team-high three assists. Natalie Encarnacion registered a double-double, scoring 11 points while snatching 10 rebounds, and Sophia Ridley led all Broncos with 15 rebounds.

In the victory for Queensborough, Georgia Alexiou was masterful, as she scored a game-high 22 points, connecting on nine of her 21 attempts from the floor. She also collected 15 rebounds while adding three steals and swatting a pair of shots. Biance Brierre's 17 rebounds led all players on the court. She also scored 13 points and added three dimes. Jordan Grier finalized her evening with four points, 13 rebounds, and four steals.

Queensborough raced out to a 6-0 lead just 2:31 into the game. The Broncos answered that with an impressive 7-0 run over the ensuing 4:48 to catapult ahead by a point. That aforementioned run included a converted layup by Jada Parker, a converted free throw by Encarnacion, and a pair of made two-point baskets by Warda Ali. The Tigers would then finish the quarter on a 6-1 run to grab a 12-8 lead after 10 minutes of action.

Queensborough would score the first eight points of the second quarter to increase its advantage to 12 points at 20-8. The Tigers would later take a 26-14 edge into the locker room at halftime.

The Broncos kept the game interesting through three quarters, as Bronx outscored the Tigers 12-8 in the third session. After 30 minutes of action, Queensborough led 34-26. The Tigers finally pulled away in the fourth, outscoring Bronx 21-7 to account for the 22-point victory.

Both squads struggled shooting the basketball on the evening. Queensborough converted on just 29.5 percent of its attempts from the floor (23-78), while the Broncos hit on just 20.3 percent of their shots (12-59). The Tigers held a commanding 63-45 edge on the glass, while also swatting five shots to Bronx's one. Queensborough won the turnover battle, committing just 15 miscues while forcing 22 Broncos mistakes.

Bronx will now have seven days off before returning to the court on Friday, December 20, as the Broncos will play their final game in calendar year 2018. The contest will be against Raritan Valley Community College, with a start-time of 2:00pm.
