Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Tenacious Broncos use stellar defense to register solid 76-69 victory over CUNYAC foe Queensborough

The Broncos men's basketball team picked up a big victory Thursday evening, outworking the Tigers of Queensborough Community College by a score of 76-69. The game took place at the Alumni Gym. With the triumph, Bronx has now won three of its past five contests, improving to a mark of 4-8 on the 2019-2020 season (2-2 CUNYAC). The Tigers, who has been playing well coming into the game, dipped to 8-4 on the year (2-2 in conference play).

Malik Hamilton played sensationally this evening for Bronx, leading the way with a beautifully balanced effort. The sophomore drilled three shots from downtown on his way to finishing the evening with 15 points. He also posted game-highs of 16 rebounds and six assists, while also adding two steals. Tilquan Rucker posted a double-double, netting 25 points, snatching 11 rebounds, and tying for the game-high in steals with four. Brian Urena was everywhere, as he dropped in 15 points, collected six boards, tallied five assists, swatted a game-high four shots, and added two steals, and Steven Glover was very efficient, hitting seven of his 12 attempts from the floor to finish with 16 points, four rebounds, and two steals.

Despite the loss for Queensborough, Devon Matthews posted a double-double, tying for the team-high of 14 points while grabbing a team-best 11 boards. Mark Blair added 14 points (tied for the game-high), seven rebounds, four assists, and four steals, and Julio Wallace registered 12 points while snatching eight boards, tallying four steals, and adding a pair of dimes. Tyrese Apple registered a double-double, scoring 11 points and adding 10 caroms.

The Broncos came out with a ton of energy in tonight's victory, racing out to a 7-0 edge just 73 seconds into the CUNYAC contest. Bronx's biggest lead in the opening half was 11 points, as the Broncos held a 20-9 edge with 15:25 remaining in the first session. The Tigers would roar back, though, going on a 20-9 run of their own over the ensuing 12:40 to tie the game at 29 apiece.

Queensborough briefly took a 33-29 advantage, but Bronx's Hamilton would connect on a three-point basket with 54 seconds left in the half to bring the Broncos within one, and then he beat the first half buzzer, converting on a layup in the paint to give Bronx a 34-33 lead as the teams entered the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, with the game tied 57-all, Glover gave Bronx the lead for good, converting on a jumper to give the Broncos a 59-57 advantage with 6:06 remaining. Bronx held a 70-62 lead with 2:24, and looked to be in prime position to pull away and secure a victory, but the Tigers scored five consecutive points to slice the Broncos lead to three at 70-67.

With Queensborough down by three points with possession and 45 seconds remaining, the biggest play of the evening was made by Rucker, as he would steal the ball from Matthews before driving to the hoop and laying the ball home to give the Broncos a 72-67 lead. That would prove to be the dagger, as Queensborough would only convert on one more field goal the remainder of the way, as Bronx advanced for a crucial seven-point CUNYAC triumph.

Defense was the story of the night for the Broncos, as for the second consecutive home game, Bronx held an opponent to less than 77 points. Tonight, Bronx forced 26 Tigers turnovers, turning that into 17 points. The Broncos also swatted seven shots on the evening, compared to two for the Tigers. Queensborough did hold a sizeable advantage in the rebounding department, snatching 53 boards to the Broncos 44. Both squads shot respectably from the floor, with the Tigers converting on 39.7 percent of their attempts from the floor (25-63) compared to a 38.8 percent conversion rate for Bronx (31-80).

The Broncos will look to make it two consecutive victories on Monday evening, as Bronx will host ASA-Manhattan. Start-time at the Alumni Gym is scheduled for 7:00pm.
