Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Broncos relinquish 16-point first half lead, fall to CUNYAC foe BMCC 82-81 in crushing defeat

The Broncos men's basketball team failed to record their first winning streak of the season on Tuesday evening, as Bronx suffered a heartbreaking 82-81 defeat to CUNYAC foe BMCC. With the loss, the Broncos dipped to 3-8 on the 2019-2020 campaign (1-2 CUNYAC), while the Panthers improved their mark to 4-5 on the year, and 2-2 in conference competition.

Despite the loss for the Broncos, Tilquan Rucker once again led the way, as he scored a team-high 24 points while leading all players on the court with six steals. It was a rare off night for the standout sophomore, as the guard misfired on 19 shots (9-28).

Steven Glover turned in another strong performance, as he finished with 20 points and six rebounds, and Brian Urena was extremely versatile, netting 15 points, snatching eight rebounds, and tallying three assists. He also blocked a pair of shots, as well. Finally, veteran Malik Hamilton posted a double-double, scoring 14 points, snatching 10 boards, and adding four assists.

In the victory for the Panthers, BMCC was paced by Malik Bentinck, as he put together a monster performance, registering game-highs of 30 points (11-25 FG) and 24 rebounds (including 11 on the offensive side) while adding two blocks and a steal. Terrance McBride piled 26 points while grabbing nine rebounds and collecting six assists, and William Brown contributed six points and nine boards.

It was a tale of two completely different halves for the Broncos in their latest loss. Bronx raced out to an 11-2 lead just 1:59 into the game, and that advantage catapulted to as many as 16 (28-12) with 12:18 remaining in the opening half. The Panthers slowly battled their way back into the game, slicing the Broncos edge to nine (46-37) as the first half came to a close.

In the second session, the Broncos used the opening 3:50 of the period to build their lead back to 13 at 55-42, before the Panthers used a ferocious 15-1 run over the ensuing 4:53 to go ahead by a point at 57-56. It was a layup by Brown that gave BMCC the advantage.

Bronx answered in impressive fashion, however, going on a 12-2 run over a span of 3:13 to jump back ahead by a score of 68-59. That aforementioned run featured six points from Urena, four from Rucker, and a pair by Glover.

Later, the Broncos seemed to be in complete control and destined for a victory, leading the game by a score of 81-73 with just 2:08 to play. The tide, however, would turn at this juncture, as BMCC would close the game on a 9-0 run to secure the incredible comeback victory.

After the Panthers' Bentinck converted on a free throw with 1:52 remaining, the Broncos would come up empty on their next possession as Rucker missed a shot from downtown. On BMCC's next trip down the court, Terrance McBride would nail a trifecta to make it 81-77 Bronx. Rucker would then miss another jumper with 30 seconds remaining, and the Panthers would get five points (a drilled three pointer, and a game-winning two point shot) from Elvys Ceballos to win the game.

Bronx was absolutely dominated on the glass tonight, as BMCC out-rebounded the Broncos by a final count of 61-38. The Panthers grabbed 29 offensive rebounds, and turned those into 23 second chance points. Both teams struggled shooting the basketball, as BMCC converted on 37.8 percent of its attempts from the floor (31-82), and Bronx hit on 36.8 percent of its shots (32-87). The Broncos did win the turnover battle convincingly in this game, committing only 12 miscues while forcing 24 opponent errors.

The Broncos will look to bounce back on Thursday evening, as Bronx will welcome the Tigers of Queensborough to the Alumni Gym for another CUNYAC contest. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
