Broncos lose to No. 4 team in NJCAA Division III Nassau, 96-87; Tilquan Rucker honored prior to the game

The Broncos men's basketball team is still searching for its first victory at the Alumni Gym this season, as Bronx this evening fell to the No. 4 ranked team in NJCAA Division III, the Lions of Nassau Community College, by a score of 96-87 at the Alumni Gym. With the defeat, Bronx dipped to 1-6 on the 2019-2020 season, while the Lions improved to an unblemished 6-0 on the year.

Prior to the game, sophomore Tilquan Rucker was presented with a commemorative picture recognizing the fact that he reached the 1,000-point mark at the institution. The speedy standout needed just 32 career games to accomplish the aforementioned feat.

This evening, Rucker was sensational despite the Broncos loss, as he scored a game-high 39 points, connecting on 14 of his 24 shots from the floor. He also drained eight of his 11 attempts from the charity stripe, while adding seven rebounds, three assists, and a game-high 10 steals. Andre Carthorn put forth a fantastic night, as he drained five shots from three-point territory to finalize his evening with 15 points, five rebounds, and three assists, and it was Malik Hamilton scoring 12 points and snatching eight rebounds.

In the victory for Nassau, the Lions were paced by Patrick Gardner, as he posted a team-high 23 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. He also added a pair of assists. Javen Soto netted 16 points while snatching nine boards, and Michael Moreno contributed 14 points, nine caroms, and a team-high four steals.

The Broncos raced out to a 17-14 edge 6:40 into the contest, but a 9-0 Lions run over the ensuing 1:59 put Nassau ahead by a score of 26-17. Consecutive three-point baskets by Hamilton and Carthorn brought the Broncos to within three at 26-23, but on the Lions next possession, Gardner would answer with a trifecta to put Nassau back up six, 29-23.

Later, Nassau held a 48-38 advantage with 2:25 remaining in the half, but the Broncos would finish the session on a modest 8-3 run to slice the Lions edge to five, 51-46, as the teams entered the locker room at halftime.

The Lions score the first nine points of the second half to bump their lead to 60-46, and Nassau would eventually go ahead by as many as 24 (85-61). The Broncos wouldn't quit, continuing to push, but even a ferocious 26-11 run to finish the game wasn't enough, as Bronx fell short on its home floor.

Nassau connected on 45.9 percent of its attempts from the floor for the evening (39-85), while the Broncos shot nearly an identical percentage, converting on 30 of their 72 attempts (45.7). The Lions dominated the glass, snatching 60 rebounds compare to 40 for Bronx, and the Broncos won the turnover battle, committing 24 miscues while forcing 27 opposition mistakes. Both teams struggled from the charity stripe, with Bronx misfiring on nine of 27 (66.7 percent), and Nassau missing 10 freebees (13-23, 56.5 percent).

The Broncos will resume the CUNYAC portion of their schedule on Thursday evening, as Bronx will take on Kingsborough in Brooklyn, NY. Start-time is scheduled for 8:00pm.
