Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Broncos bend, don't break in thrilling 87-81 victory over BMCC on Tuesday evening; Bronx now 4-3 in CUNYAC play

The Broncos' men's basketball team picked up a huge victory on Tuesday evening, defeating the Panthers of BMCC by a score of 87-81 in overtime in a CUNYAC contest. The win, Bronx' second straight, improved the Broncos to a mark of 9-12 on the 2018-2019 campaign, including a record of 4-3 in conference action. On the flip side, BMCC dropped its fourth straight, slipping to 17-5 on the year (5-2 CUNYAC).

Pacing Bronx in the tremendous win was Tilquan Rucker, as he scored a team-high 29 points while tying for the game-high with five steals. He also snatched five rebounds and added four assists, as well. Hector Montano posted a double-double with 13 points, 19 rebounds, and five assists, and Malik Hamilton put forth a solid all-around game, contributing 15 points, seven assists, and six rebounds.

Despite the loss for BMCC, Alex Humphreys scored a game-high 32 points while tying for the game-high with five steals. He hit six three-point baskets on the evening while also swishing all four of his free throw attempts. The standout also snatched five rebounds while tallying three assists. Ashan Adams posted a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds, and Amir Davis scored 10 points while dishing seven assists and grabbing three rebounds.

In what was a stellar game from start to finish, neither team led by more than 5 points through the opening session. Humphreys was magnificent for the Panthers in the first 20 minutes of action, netting 23 points, including a buzzer-beating three-point basket to put BMCC ahead by a score of 41-36 as the teams entered the locker room at halftime.

Bronx used a 14-0 run in the opening 4:04 of the second session to catapult ahead by a score of 50-41. Rucker netted the first nine points during that spurt, and the run was capped off by a converted three-point basket by Joshua Rivera, and a made free throw by Rickardo Byfield. The Panthers batted back with a run of their own, though, outscoring the Broncos 13-4 over the ensuing 4:50 to tie the contest at 54 apiece.

Throughout the remainder of regulation, neither team would grab a lead greater than five points. In the waning stages of the second half, and Bronx holding on to a 76-73 advantage, BMCC's Humphreys would strike again, nailing a triple to tie the game at 76 apiece with 16 seconds left. On the Broncos' last possession of regulation, Rucker would misfire on a three-point attempt, sending the game into overtime.

In the extra period, a three-point play by Rucker, and another jumper by Hamilton put Bronx ahead 81-76 with 3:49 to go. BMCC kept things close, pulling to within three points at 83-81 with just 50 seconds to go. The Broncos would not be denied, though, as Rucker would connect on a layup with 13 seconds to go, and Montano would nail a pair of free throws with six seconds left to essentially ice the game.

The teams' shooting percentages were nearly even, with the Panthers hitting on 41.8 percent of their attempts from the floor (28-67) compared to a 40.3 percent conversion rate for the Broncos (31-77). BMCC held a slight edge in the rebounding department, snatching 42 caroms to Bronx' 39. The Broncos took advantage of the Panthers' mistakes, scoring 28 points off of 21 BMCC miscues. Bronx also scored 22 second chance points, compared to nine for the opposition.

The Broncos will return to action on Thursday evening, as they'll take on Nassau. The game will take place at the Alumni Gym, with a start-time of 8:00pm.
