The Broncos' men's basketball teams dropped a tough home contest on Thursday evening, falling to the Lions of Nassau by a score of 88-76 at the Alumni Gym. With the defeat, Bronx dipped to 9-13 on the 2018-2019 season. Nassau improved to 17-7 with the triumph. The Lions' win clinched a season sweep of the Broncos, as Nassau also defeated Bronx 80-74 back on November 20 in Garden City, NY.
For Bronx, the team's fortunes continued to be swapped as it pertains to home and road success. With the loss, the Broncos are now 3-8 at the Alumni Gym. On the flip side, the Broncos are 6-5 on the road.
Despite this evening's loss for Bronx, the Broncos were once again led by
Tilquan Rucker, as the standout connected on 13 of his 21 attempts from the floor to finish with a game-high 27 points. He also snatched four rebounds and recorded a pair of steals.
Hector Montano put together a very strong 36 minutes, as he posted his 11
th double-double of the season with 18 points and 13 rebounds. He also recorded four assists and a pair of swatted shots.
Malik Hamilton finalized his night with 12 points and four rebounds, and
Rickardo Byfield added 11 points, eight rebounds, four blocks, and two assists.
In the victory for Nassau, Cheyenne Nettleton scored a team-high 19 points. He connected on three shots from beyond the arc, while also nailing four of his five attempts from the charity stripe. Nettleton tallied a game-high seven assists while also pulling down five rebounds. Darius Young narrowly missed a double-double with 17 points and nine rebounds, and Stephen Moncrieffe and Jordan Lee finished with 15 points apiece.
The Lions raced out to an early 24-13 just 9:04 into the contest. Nassau later led 38-29 with 3:54 remaining in the opening session before the Broncos would finish the half on a 10-5 run to pull to within four points, 43-39, as the teams entered the locker room at halftime.
In the early stages of the second session, Montano would connect on a three-point basket to knot the contest at 50 apiece with 15:33 remaining. Later, with the contest tied 57-all, Nassau would take the lead for good when Matthew Trepeta would hit a three pointer. From there, the Lions would outscore the Broncos 28-19 to account for the 12-point victory.
Nassau connected on 48.5 percent of its attempts from the floor (32-66), while Bronx converted on 42.5 percent of its shots (31-73). The Broncos held a slim 42-38 edge in the rebounding department, and the Lions tallied 21 assists on the evening compared to 11 for Bronx. The teams were nearly even in the turnovers column, with Nassau committing 15 miscues to the Broncos' 14.
Bronx will return to action on Saturday, as the team heads to Selden, NY to take on Suffolk. Start-time is scheduled for 1:00pm.
