Broncos combine to hit six homeruns in doubleheader, defeating Panthers 17-2 and 15-7 in Bellerose, NY on Sunday afternoon

The Broncos finalized their stellar 2018 regular season on Sunday, turning back the Panthers of the Borough of Manhattan Community College by scores of 17-2 and 15-7. The games took place at the Padavan Preller Complex in Bellerose, NY. With the wins, Bronx is now 20-11 on the season, and 11-1 in CUNYAC action. The Panthers finalized their season at 4-24 (2-12 CUNYAC).

In game one, the Broncos' Kevin Gerson earned the victory by pitching a complete game (six innings), as he allowed just two runs (both earned) on two hits while walking six and striking out nine.

Offensively for Bronx in the opener, four players hit homeruns, including Jeffrey Almanzar, Derek Galvez, Carlos Rivera Ayala, and Steven Santana. Almanzar also scored two runs, walked, and drove in a run. Galvez – in addition to his long homer – recorded a single, dented home plate twice, and recorded three RBI. Rivera Ayala – in addition to his round-tripper – notched a double, scored two runs, and drove in four runs, and Santana singled, scored three runs, walked, and picked up three RBI in addition to his homerun. Kevin Almonte also contributed three singles while scoring two runs and picking up three RBI.

Bronx would need just six innings to defeat the Borough of Manhattan Community College in game one, defeating the Panthers via the mercy rule after six complete frames of action.

Game two of the day featured Bronx pitcher Jesse Castillo getting the start. He did not have it for the Broncos, as he lasted just two-thirds of an inning, allowing three earned runs and one hit while walking four and striking out one. Derek Galvez would come on in relief and hurl one and two-thirds scoreless innings, but it was Kevin Almonte who would dazzle in relief, as he pitched three and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs (none earned) and no hits while walking two and striking out four.

On the offensive side for Bronx, Marlon Bautista dominated at the plate, as he hit a homerun and recorded three singles while scoring three runs and driving in five. Galvez added yet another homerun while also tallying a single, drawing a walk, scoring twice and driving in three, and Christian Cedeno showed tremendous patience at the plate, as he singled, scored twice, drove in a run, and walked four times.

The Broncos would win game two in six innings, defeating the Panthers via the eight-run mercy rule after six complete innings of action.

Bronx will return to action on Monday evening, as the Broncos will face the Tigers of Queensborough Community College in the 2018 CUNYAC championship game. Bronx will be designated as the home team for the evening (via earning the conference's No. 1 seed). The Broncos took three out of four against the Tigers in the regular season, and three out of the four meetings between the two teams were decided by three runs or less. First pitch for tonight's game is scheduled for 7:00pm.
