The Bronx Community College baseball team picked up a pair of convincing victories on Friday afternoon, defeating the Express of Monroe College-Bronx by scores of 17-9 and 16-4 at Ohio Field. With the wins, the Broncos have now won three consecutive contests, and their record on the 2018 season sits at 7-6. The Express dipped to 0-10 with the pair of defeats.

In the first contest of the afternoon, Monroe College-Bronx player Harold Valdez led off the game with a double, and would later advance to third base on a wild pitch by Broncos starter
Alexander Pimentel. Devon Marrero would then record an RBI single to give the Express an early 1-0 edge.

Monroe College-Bronx wouldn't hold the slim advantage for long, though, as the Broncos responded with seven runs on three hits in the bottom of the first, knocking Monroe starter Andy Rodriguez out of the game early. After one inning of play, Bronx Community College held a commanding 7-1 lead.

Neither team would dent home plate in the top of the second inning, but the Express added a run in the top of the third, as Edwin Veras would recorded a double and later come around to score on a Broncos fielding miscue. That made the score 7-2 in favor of the Broncos. Bronx Community College would once again answer, though, scoring five runs in the bottom of the third, a scoring surge highlighted by RBI doubles by
Justin Nunez and Emmanuel Frias, and an RBI single by standout Derek Galvez.

In the top of the fourth, the Express – though trailing by a score of 12-2 – would not quit. Monroe College-Bronx would continue to show resiliency, knocking Broncos starting hurler Alexander Pimentel out of the game, and slicing its deficit to just four runs. Julian Ovalles-Garcia led off with a base hit, and after Bryan Guzman was hit by a pitch and Jose Santiago grounded into a fielder's choice, the top of the order came to the plate with two on and just one out.

Valdez would drive the first run of the inning home on an RBI single. Marrero then followed with another RBI single, scoring Santiago and making it a 12-4 contest. Bronx Community College would then go to the bullpen to bring in Derek Galvez, but the Express continued to find notch the runs, as Valdez scored on an error, and Jesus Hilario walked to load the bases for Garcia.

Garcia would then record a three-run double to left, scoring Marrero, Veras and Hilario. After three-and-a-half innings of play, Bronx Community College led by a score of 12-8. The Broncos would respond with two runs in the bottom of the fourth before denting home plate two more in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead back to eight at 16-8. Each team would add a run in the sixth inning to account for the 17-9 final score in game one.

Pimentel (1-0) earned the win for the Broncos, while Andy Rodriguez (0-3) took the loss for the Express.

Offensively for Bronx Community College in its opener,
Ariel Irving Lora dominated at the dish, slamming a pair of homeruns while scoring three times and driving home four. He also walked twice and stole a base in an incredible performance. Emmanuel Frias doubled, singled three times, scored twice, drove home three and swiped a bag, and Jeffrey Almanzar doubled, singled, scored three times, picked up two RBI, and stole a base.

Garcia led the Express at the plate, doubling twice and recording four RBI, while Marrero added three hits while scoring twice and driving home a pair. Ovalles-Garcia and Valdez also went -for-3 with a double, walk, two runs scored and an RBI.

In the second game of the afternoon, it was more of the same for the Broncos, as Bronx Community College recorded nine second inning runs to put the game out of reach early.

Aaron Bonilla Suarez recorded the victory for the Broncos in game two, as he allowed just four earned runs while striking out seven.

Carlos Rivera Ayala doubled, singled, walked, scored twice, and drove in four runs for Bronx Community College. Raudy Alberto Acosta recorded two hits, walked, scored two runs, and drove home three, and Kevin Almonte singled, walked two times, and scored two runs, as well.

The Broncos are back in action against the Express on Saturday, April 7, as the two teams will face off in a doubleheader at Roberto Clemente State Park beginning at 12 p.m.
