Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Despite going on a pair of 13-2 runs, Broncos still come up short of comeback, dropping game to Dukes, 73-69 Friday evening

The Broncos' men's basketball team nearly rallied from a huge first half deficit, but ultimately fell short, losing a non-conference game to the Dukes of Cumberland County Community College by a score of 73-69. The contest took place at the Alumni Gymnasium in the Bronx. With the defeat, the Broncos slipped to 1-5 on the season, while the Dukes improved to 3-3.

Despite the loss for Bronx, newcomer Tilquan Rucker put together another solid game for his team. Rucker shook off a slow start, as after starting 0-for-9 from the floor, he connected on 11 of his next 15 shots to finish with a game-high 28 points. He also recorded a game high seven steals while snatching seven rebounds and adding two assists. Hector Montano drilled three shots from downtown, while also hitting on five of six attempts from the free throw line to finish with 18 points. He also posted game highs of 13 rebounds, five assists, and two blocks. Mailk Hamilton contributed with a modest nine points and six caroms.

In the victory for Cumberland County, Phil Cisrow led the way for his team, nailing eight of his 10 attempts from the floor to finish with a share of the team-high in points with 20. He also snatched seven rebounds and added a pair of assists, as well. Kevin Clark scored 20 points while adding a team high five steals, and Taylor Clarke netted 15 points while snatching five boards.

The Dukes held a 35-17 lead with 4:04 remaining in the opening session before the Broncos finished the stanza on a 13-2 run (sparked by six points from Rucker and five from Montano) to pull to within seven points (37-30) as the first half came to a close.

Cumberland County started the second half strong, out-scoring Bronx 9-4 in first 3:27 of the session to catapult back to a 14-point edge (46-32). The Dukes later led 58-47 before the Broncos used a ferocious 13-2 run over a span of 3:06 to knot the game at 60 points apiece.

Later, with the Dukes leading 68-64, Taylor Clarke would drain a huge three- point basket to put Cumberland County ahead by a score of 71-64 with 1:43 remaining. Bronx would only connect on one more field goal for the remainder of the game, as the Dukes would hold on for a four-point victory.

Although Bronx shot better from the field in the second half, the conversion rates for each team were drastically different. The Dukes drilled 50.9 percent of their attempts from the floor (27-53) compared to 34.3 percent for the Broncos (24-70). Cumberland County held a slim 44-41 edge in the rebounding department, while Bronx won the steals category (17-6), as well as the assists category (11-9). The Broncos also kept their miscues at a minimum, committing just 16 turnovers while forcing 21. Both teams struggled mightily at the free throw line, with the Dukes missing 14 of their 30 attempts there (53.3 percent), and Bronx misfiring on 11 of their 25 freebees (56 percent).

Bronx will look to end its four-game losing streak on Sunday, as the team takes to the road to battle Manor College. Start-time is scheduled for 1:00pm.
