Women's basketball team can't overcome turnovers, rebounding differential in 77-49 loss to Express on opening night

The Broncos' women's basketball team dropped its season-opener on Tuesday evening, falling to the Express of Monroe College-Bronx by a score of 77-49 at the Alumni Gymnasium. The contest served as Bronx' season-opener, while the Express improved to a mark of 1-2 on the 2018-2019 campaign.

Veteran Siara Torres connected on a three-point basket with 5:42 remaining in the first quarter to give her team a 9-8 advantage, but Monroe College-Bronx would close out the quarter on a 9-4 run to grab a 17-13 lead after 10 minutes of action.

In the second quarter, an Asia Nelson converted jumper with 7:50 remaining in the half gave the Broncos a 20-19 edge, but that would be the final lead Bronx would hold. The Express' Brianna Williams would nail a shot on her team's next possession to give Monroe College-Bronx a 21-20 advantage. A fastbreak layup by Marya Camara, and a three-point play by Julie Trowers put the Express ahead by 26-20 with 5:55 left in the half. The Express continued to build its lead, eventually going up by double digits (38-27) as the clock expired on the opening stanza.

The Express dominated the third quarter, out-scoring the Broncos 20-10 in that session, while also out-doing Bronx 19-12 in the final period to account for the convincing 28-point triumph (77-49).

Leading the way for Monroe College-Bronx was Trowers, as she dominated in all facets by posting game-highs of 20 points and 17 rebounds while also adding two steals. Arianna Johnson contributed 12 points, nine rebounds, three steals, and a pair of assists, and Camara narrowly missed a triple-double with 10 points, 13 rebounds, while tying for game-highs of nine assists and four steals.

Despite the loss for the Broncos, Torres posted a game-high 19 points while connecting on five shots from beyond-the-arc. She also drilled four of her six free throw attempts, while tying for the game-high in steals with four. Nelson posted a double-double with 17 points and a team-high 15 rebounds, and Nia Simmons added six points while tying for the game-high of nine assists, and pulling down eight rebounds.


The Broncos committed 29 turnovers on the evening in the loss, while also getting out-rebounded 65-50 for the game.

Bronx will return to action on Thursday evening, as the Broncos will open up their CUNYAC portion of the 2018-2019 schedule. Bronx will host Kingsborough at the Alumni Gym, with start-time scheduled for 6:00pm.
