Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Broncos' ferocious rally falls short in season-opener as Express holds on for 86-78 win Tuesday evening at Alumni Gym

The Broncos' men's basketball team's late push fell short on opening night, as Bronx Community College lost to the Express of Monroe College-Bronx by a score of 86-78 at the Alumni Gymnasium. The game served as the season-opening contest for both teams.

The new-look Broncos, who feature only one returning player from a season ago (Hector Montano Valenzuela) and a slew of hungry incoming freshman, exchanged the lead with the Express a total of 12 times in the opening 8:14 of the contest before Monroe College-Bronx took the lead for good on Arturo Sealy's converted jumper with 11:46 remaining in the first half. Monroe College built its lead up to 14 points at one point during the opening stanza before taking a 49-39 lead into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, the Express out-scored the Broncos 23-17 in the opening 9:50 of the session to take its biggest lead of the game at 72-56, but that is when Bronx Community College would put together a huge run. Over the ensuing 4:53 of action, the Broncos went on a 17-3 run to slice Monroe-Bronx' edge to just two points a 75-73. That aforementioned spurt was highlighted by Tilquan Rucker's seven points during that stretch. Malik Hamilton and veteran Hector Montano Valenzuela netted four points apiece during that push, as well.

Monroe College would settle down after that, not allowing the Broncos to get any closer than two points down. The Express would finish the game on an 11-5 run to account for the 86-78 final score.

In the victory for the Express, Ghetty Dimitri Allui netted a team-high 20 points on seven-of-13 shooting. He also connected on five of his seven attempts from the charity stripe while grabbing seven rebounds and tallying a pair of steals. Gian Batista added 18 points to go along with a game-high six assists and four rebounds, and Sealy hit on seven of his 10 shots to finalize his evening with 15 points, two blocks, and a pair of steals.

Newcomer Tilquan Rucker led the way for the Broncos with a dazzling performance, as he drilled three triples and hit on nine of his 18 shots overall, finishing the night with a game-high 26 points. He also shared a game-high of three steals, while tying for the team-high in rebounds with six. William Paradise made the most of his opportunities at the line, hitting 11 of 14 from there, finishing with 17 points, a team-high five assists, four rebounds, and two steals. Hamilton finalized his night with 14 points and four rebounds.

The Express connected on 47.1 percent of its shots on the evening (33-70) compared to 44.4 percent from the field for Bronx Community College (28-63). Monroe held a slim 44-38 edge in the rebounding department, while also slightly winning the turnover battle by committing 22 miscues compared to 24 mistakes for the Broncos.

Bronx will return to action on Thursday evening, as the Broncos will open up their CUNYAC portion of the 2018-2019 schedule. Bronx will host Kingsborough at the Alumni Gym, with start-time scheduled for 8:00pm.
