Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Broncos' valiant effort not enough as Sharks pull away late, defeating Bronx 91-78 at Alumni Gymnasium

The Broncos' men's basketball team put forth a hearty effort on Tuesday evening, but Bronx was unable to get over the hump, falling to the Sharks of Suffolk County Community College by a score of 91-78. The contest took place at the Alumni Gymnasium. With the defeat, the Broncos slipped to 1-4 on the 2018-2019 season, while the Sharks stayed unblemished at 9-0.

Despite the loss for Bronx, Tilquan Rucker posted game-highs of 26 points and four blocks. He also snatched six rebounds and added three steals and two assists. The most recent CUNYAC Rookie of the Week Mailk Hamilton contributed 16 points and six rebounds (four on the offensive glass), and Hector Montano posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

In the victory for Suffolk, the Sharks were paced by Steven Tynes, as he connected on eight of his 15 shots from the floor, and seven of his nine attempts from the free throw line, to finalize his evening with a team-high 25 points. He also posted a game-high four steals, while also adding four assists. Tyree Grimsley scored 19 points while snatching eight rebounds, and Ronald J. Walker netted 15 points while snatching six boards, blocking three shots, and adding two steals. Finally, it was James Singer posting a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards.

The teams exchanged the lead four times in the opening 3:58 of action, as Suffolk's Ronald J. Walker nailed a jumper to put the Sharks ahead by a score of 8-6. At many junctures of the opening half, it looked like Suffolk would start to pull away, as the Sharks held leads of 26-18 and 35-27, but the Broncos continued to keep things close, finding themselves down just six points (44-38) as the teams entered the locker room at halftime.

Early in the second stanza, the Broncos would open up the session by scoring eight consecutive points. That run consisted of a pair of converted free throws by Montano, a three-point play by Hamilton, another freebee by Hamilton, and a layup by William Paradise. Bronx led by a score of 46-44 at that point.

Later, Suffolk held a 60-56 lead with 10:58 remaining before putting together a huge run to put the game away, outscoring the Broncos 27-9 over the next 7:42 of action to catapult ahead by a score of 87-65. The Sharks went up by 22 at that point, eventually winning the contest by 13 points.

The Broncos will return to action on Friday evening, as Bronx will host Cumberland County Community College. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
