Box Score Paramas, NJ - 10/8/13
On Thursday, November 7
th the Broncos began their 2013-2014 season against the Bergen Community College Bulldogs. The Broncos took to the court led by second year head coach
Sean Kelly. Coach Kelly, former head coach of the Bergen CC Bulldogs returned once again to face his old team. But before the game, Coach Kelly was recognized by Bergen's athletic director Jorge Hernandez for his years of hard work. Coach Kelly took his Bergen CC Bulldogs to a 30-0 undefeated 2010 season and a trip to the NJCAA National Championship. "I didn't expect this at all." said Coach Kelly before the tip.
In this matchup, the Broncos started the game with an all freshmen line-up,
Christopher Velez,
Parris Purcelle,
Taylor Foster,
Kevin Vanderpool and
Brandon Bermeo with returning sophomores, Badih McQueen and
Kevin Pimentel coming off the bench to add to the Broncos firepower. The Broncos took to the court confident and ready to play forty minutes of hard, focused basketball.
The last time these two teams met was back in March 2013 and the Broncos defeated the Bulldogs 91-66. In this latest matchup Bergen came to play from the start. The game remained close for the majority of the first half until with 6:49 left in the half when Broncos guard
Stephen Wilson hit a three point goal propelling the Broncos ahead 26 to 23. This was the momentum changer the Broncos needed. The Bronx then intensified their defense and rebounding where the boards belonged to
Taylor Foster,
Brandon Bermeo and sophomore Badih McQueen. By the end of the first half, both Foster and McQueen had 11 rebounds apiece. At the same time the sharp shooting continued. Wilson kept the pressure on with his perimeter shooting, as the Broncos finished the first half with a 63-39 lead.
The second half began with the Broncos playing a little flat. The Bulldogs sensed the sluggish play the Broncos were presenting and they seized the opportunity by hitting several three pointers, closing the lead. After a time out called by Coach Kelly, the Broncos returned to the court with their focus restored. Once again, the defense tightened up and the scoring continued.
Off the bench, guard
Abdel Peguero added thirteen points. The Broncos also received key contributions from Purcelle, Pimentel,
Timmel Perkins,
Darrell Blackstock and
Torrence Ested as they went on to beat the Bulldogs 100 to 77. With continued focus and hard work, the 2013-2014 Broncos team should be a force to be reckoned with.
