Bronx baseball earns NJCAA Region 15 sweep, defeating Dutchess 4-3 and 17-3 at Ohio Field

The Broncos' baseball team picked up an NJCAA Region 15 doubleheader sweep on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Falcons of Dutchess by scores of 4-3 (eight innings) and 17-3 (five innings). The games took place at Ohio Field in the Bronx. With the victories, the Broncos improved to a mark of 5-5 on the 2026 campaign, while the Falcons remained winless at 0-9.

Game 1 of Doubleheader: Broncos 4, Falcons 3 (Eight Innings)

In the first game of the afternoon, freshman Lenox Rondon of Bronx registered game-highs of three hits (a double and two singles) and two RBI. He also drew a walk and stole a base, as well. Cristian Calderon registered a two-bagger and a single while scoring a pair of runs, and veteran Giancarlo Leon singled, scored a run, and walked.

Sophomore Anshel Novelo twisted seven strong innings for the hosts, allowing just three runs (two earned) on five hits while walking three and striking out seven. He also hit on batter in taking a no-decision. Reliever Juan Santos (3-0) pitched a scoreless eighth inning in picking up the win, walking one batter.

Offensively for Dutchess, Marc Cretara led the way with a two-RBI single. Joseph Mandile reached base twice with a single and a walk, and he also scored a run, and John Ciulla singled and walked.

Tyler Nolan (0-2) took the loss for the Falcons, hurling 7.2 innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits. He also walked four batters, hit one, and struck out five.

In a game that was scoreless until the bottom of the third, the Broncos pushed a run across when Calderon reach on an infield single, advancing to second base on an error Joseph Mandile. Leon scored on the play to make it 1-0 Bronx. The hosts increased their lead to two when Rodon singled to left later in the inning.

The score remained 2-0 in favor of the Broncos until the bottom of the fifth, when Rodon doubled-in Calderon to boost Bronx's advantage to three.

In the top of the seventh, Novelo had worked his way into a bases loaded, two-out jam, but was still just one out away from earning a complete game shutout. Unfortunately, Cretara smacked a two-RBI single to right field, with Joseph Mandile reaching home plate when Rondon let the throw to third base skip by him and go into the Falcons dugout. The game was then tied at three, and stayed that way until the bottom of the eighth.

Jason Espinoza and Luis Villaman had reached on consecutive errors to start the bottom half of the eighth, bringing up Matos. After Matos popped out for the first out of the inning, Leon hit a tapper to short. Villaman was forced out at second base, but the attempted throw to get Leon at first bounced off the first baseman's body. By the time he picked the ball up and fired home, Espinoza had already dented home plate to account for the winning run of the contest.

Game 2 of Doubleheader: Broncos 17, Falcons 3 (Five Innings)

Unlike the opener, game two of the afternoon wasn't much of a contest. The Broncos used 11 hits and 12 walks to plate 17 runs, led by Rondon's stellar effort. The youngster fell just a homerun short of the cycle, hitting a triple, double, single, and drawing a walk. He also scored three runs and drove in four. Braily Severino registered a three-RBI double, and Leon singled twice, walked twice, scored a pair of runs, and drove in three.

Starter Abel Acosta Vasquez started for the Broncos and lasted three innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits while walking two, hitting a batter, and striking out two. Reliever Anderson Puello started the fourth inning and subsequently picked up the win, twisting one scoreless frame and allowing one hit while striking out a batter.

Cretera led the way for Falcons offensively in game two, as he singled twice, drew a walk, scored a run, and picked up a RBI. Tyler Nolan picked up an RBI single, and Joseph Mandile tripled, singled, and dented home plate twice.

On the mound for the visitors, Cretara took the loss, allowing seven runs (six earned) on five hits while walking six, throwing a wild pitch, and striking out one. Reliever Aiden Hartwell didn't fare much better, as he registered just one out, allowing eight earned runs on two hits while issuing three walks and hitting three batters.

The Falcons took a quick 2-0 advantage in the top of the first when Nolan drew a walk with the bases loaded, and John Ciuella followed that by hitting a sacrifice fly. Bronx got one run back in the bottom of the first via a Rondon double, as the Broncos cut the visitors' edge in half.

In the bottom of the second inning, Bronx sent 19 men to the plate and scored 14 runs to take a commanding 15-2 advantage after two innings of play. Eduardo Flores-Barrientos and Cristian Calderson drew consecutive bases loaded walks to put the Broncos ahead 3-2, and Rondon followed by smashing a three-run triple to left to bump Bronx's advantage to 6-2. After Justin Perez Salcedo and Albert Tejada were both hit by pitches to force in two more runs (making it 8-2 Broncos), Leon laced a two-RBI single to right center to push the Bronx led to eight (10-2).

The final three runs of the second inning by the Broncos were scored via an RBI single by Calderon, a three-run triple by Rondon, and an error committed by the Dutchess defense.

Bronx would tack on two more runs in the later innings of the ballgame, courtesy of a Hector Jimenez RBI double in the third inning, and a bases loaded walk drawn by Leon in the fourth. That made it 17-2 in favor of the Broncos, and Bronx would eventually go on to win via the mercy rule, 17-3, after 4.5 innings of action.

Up next for the Broncos:

The Broncos will return to action on Tuesday afternoon, as Bronx will welcome Queensborough to Ohio Field for a crucial CUNY Community College game. Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 3:00pm.
